Watch and pray. The rescuers are optimistic that they will reach the cavity where the miners are located by midnight, perhaps as soon as 10pm et.

They just reported that several PA miners were caught in a similar situation thirty years ago AND WERE RESCUED ALIVE AFTER A WEEK IN THE HOLE.

After all we have been through in the last year, it has not weakened our faith... it has made it stronger! Praise God Almightly!

Did anyone notice how Gov. Schweiker thanked the rescue workers, the engineers who located the most likely place to drill the air hole in the first place, the intelligence & dedication of everyone involved, and in his MSNBC interview mentioned looking up and seeing the big American flag flying over the whole operation and soaking up the sense of American can-do optimism?

And did anyone notice how Gov. Schweiker never once thought to thank God (that I've heard)? I LIKE THIS GUY!!!

Food and water is one thing...pressure is something else. Food and water will sustain them in the hole, but if they come up too fast from high pressure to normal surface pressure, like the old compression suit divers used to do when the suits would fill up, they can get the bends. It's buildup of nitrogen, I think, and causes amazing pain and sometimes death. That's more what I'm worried about. I remember they said the navy loaned Pennsylvania nine compression chambers. Now the question is are they going to have to use them. Is the pressure now equalized surface to underground? Has that been addressed tonight? They mentioned the drill was serving as a seal, so at that point it wasn't. That more what I want to know. Fox and CNN weren't saying before I came upstairs.

"They would only have to decompress if the air had been under a lot of pressure. When they broke through it appeared they didn't need the air seal after all. If that is the case, the pressure wasn't all that high and nitrogen in the blood (the "bends") likely won't be a problem they have to deal with."

It appears that everything, so far, has gone as well as it could have. (Goodnight all)

I think GW would handle it much more discreetly and with respect. He probably wouldn't be interviewed, would be with the families.. maybe a personal comment to each as they are put on the helicopters. He knows how to stay away from the microphones. It's nation-wide good and uplifting news, something we haven't seen much of lately. Our American miners, strong and able, have done something fantastic, assuming the recovery goes well.

I thought I read a couple of posts earlier that stated the air pressure isn't an issue... Like I stated I don't know much about mining but with the two shafts and the water gone isn't the air pressure okay? My husband who is from KY and has had personal experience with mining states they should be okay ...

To: Petronski; All
unlike the poor guys still down that hole and working topside right now,
most of us can climb into bed when the spirit moves us;
an action i need to take, as work awaits tomorrow ...

thanks to all who helped keep the news flowing about this tonight.

may god give strength to those still on-site,
and may the dawn find all well and back with their families.

One of the persons interviewed is a specialist regarding decompression. He said that he and the equipment would stay for another 24 hours after the rescue is complete, just in case. So the rescue team is clearly taking into account all those possibilities.
