This would have come as a surprise to generations of Russians and American Leftists who have been complaining about Wilson's anti-Bolshevik intervention during the Russian Civil War. It would also come as a surprise to those who lived in the states that replaced the Hapsburg empire, none of which could have been called Communist in the interwar period, and none of which, were particularly leftist, save during the postwar chaos.
But, in any event, it really wasn't our war. So we should have stayed out. Wilson's grandparents were from Britain, so he had close ties with that side. Also the ability to remake the world must have been hard for him to avoid. But German actions like the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram made it much easier for Wilson to get us involved.
