DALLAS - For the first time in four decades, Democrats have a shot at winning the Texas Senate seat soon to be vacated by Republican Sen. Phil Gramm.

"To see a Democrat making a run for it is just something we haven't seen for a long time," said political analyst Jonathan Smaby.

I've heard that Kirk says he expects Cornyn to use race as an issue. I expect it will be Kirk himself doing that.

"They used to ask Willy Sutton why do you rob banks, and he said that's where the money is. I'm here to raise money," Kirk said in defense of the trip. "

Of all the analogies he could make of his fund-raising, this was the best he could do? If I was his opponent, I'd get some mileage out of this one...

"There's no question all the charisma is on the Kirk side, not the Cornyn side."

Sorry, but Texans don't vote for charisma, we elected Phil and Kay Bailey didn't we?

I don't see Kirk winning for the simple fact that he hasn't had to take any postions. Is he for gun control? I bet he is. The fact that he said he will oppose some Bush's nomminnes for judges will not sit well. Plus alot of hispanic's are ticked at him since the Rat establishment endorsed Kirk over Morales in the primaries. And unlike hispancis in California and New York, Texas hispanics don't vote in monolethic block. I saw this report on Fox last night and Micheal Barrone seams to think that the fact this guy was mayor of Dallas is going to clinch the Dallas area for him. I like Barrone but he needs to 1) visit Dallas and 2) he needs to see that the burbs and the like are grwoing faster than Dallas and those are mostly in heavly Republican districts. The burbs are growing faster because people with any sense are moving out of Dallas proper.

In what way, exactly, does a GOPer in the current environment hope to "use race?" The modern Republican wets his pants at the thought of even criticizing racial preferences; I would bet the famous - and famously effective - "hands" ad run by Jesse Helms twelve years ago would now by stoned into removal from the air inside of a day.

What, then, is left? They'll simply insinuate that a white Republican running against a black Democrat is - well, you just know he's racist!

What's Fox's problem? Everyone knows Kirk is going to be political roadkill in November. Even Metroplex voters that are familiar with Kirk (the rest of the State isn't at all) don't like him. Even with "knock and drag" voter fraud committed by the Demo-rats, they won't get enough votes to balance out even a moderate Republican turnout. With a good effort to get out the vote, Cornyn should trounce Kirk.

Prolly a lot of truth in the fact he isn't well known even after having won a statewide race.... But come this fall when President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Senators Hutchison & Gramm all make a swing through the state asking for Cornyn to be elected I think Kirk will become the biggest loser among the democrat trifecta.....
