Bakersfield - The Bakersfield woman accused of starting the massive McNally wildfire will be arraigned Friday morning in a federal court in Fresno. But documents reveal this is not her first brush with the law. Peri Van Brunt, accused of started the devastating McNally fire, lives in east Bakersfield, just two hours from the destruction.
In the window of her home is a note saying to stay off and no one to answer the door. Next to the home is the salon where Brunt and her husband get their haircut. The owner says Brunt works as a waitress and is cordial when she visits.
A neighbor nearby says in her thirteen years of living next door, she seldom has noticed anyone outside the Van Brunt home, with the exception in recent months of a young couple fighting.
But Kern County court records reveal a long wrap sheet of felony drug charges and traffic violations.
In 1990, driving with a suspended license, no insurance and failing to appear in court. In 1992, felony drug possession charges and one count of possession of marijuana for sale.
In 1993, another drug possession charge. In 1994, three more counts of drug possession.
And finally, an outstanding warrant that still exists for the 1990 misdemeanor traffic offenses.
Brunt is accused of setting the fire burning ever so close to the states most majestic trees, the sequoias. What reportedly began as a campfire gone out of control after cooking hotdogs, is now become one of the biggest fires in Sequoia National Forest History.
