A Texas Christian University football player was arrested Wednesday on a charge of injury to a child in connection with the July 3 death of his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter, Benbrook police said.

Frank Montgomery, 22, a senior and tailback on the team, is being held in the Tarrant County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's office has ruled the death of Savannah M. Koiner a homicide. The child died at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth of blunt force trauma to the head, police said.

Mr. Montgomery, who was majoring in management, was suspended Tuesday from TCU, university spokeswoman Kelli Horst said. University officials were informed Friday that Mr. Montgomery was a suspect in the child's death.

Police said Mr. Montgomery was baby-sitting Savannah on July 2 as he had in the past.

Mr. Montgomery called 911 that evening to report that the child was not breathing, said Officer Jennifer Gabbert, a police spokeswoman.

Emergency medical workers went to an apartment in the 5500 block of Greenwood Creek Drive, where they found the child unresponsive, Officer Gabbert said. The child's mother was not home.

Officer Gabbert said Mr. Montgomery had cooperated with investigators but had given different accounts of what happened, including that the child's head may have bounced on the floor when he was doing CPR.

Officer Gabbert declined to discuss what might have caused the child's injuries.

Mr. Montgomery graduated from Duncanville High School in 1998 after helping lead the school's team to consecutive district titles.

At TCU, Mr. Montgomery was listed as a fourth-string tailback this year. He has played in nine games in three years, according to the team's media guide.

I would put him in jail simply for giving the lamest explanation of all time, whether he's guilty or not. Head hit the floor while doing CPR, my foot! Now why was he doing CPR on her pray tell? Don't tell me, don't tell me! She fell of the couch, right? No? She fell in the bathtub, then.

Tie the m/f's hands behind his back make him kneel on the floor and beat his brains out with a ball bat.

He's toast. You have to be a starter to get away with beating women up, and you'd have to be an All-American at Oklahoma to get away with killing a child. Since he's playing at TCU instead of Miami, he probably can't afford Johnny Cockroach.

Let's not leave the University of Nebraska (at least in the Dr. Osborne years) off the list.

I'm afraid what you say about OU was true in the Switzer-Land years.
I hope that the current regime won't disappoint in the same way...we'll see.
