Could Local Man Be Samantha's Killer?

Convicted Kidnapper, Rapist At Large, Former Officer Says

SAN DIEGO -- The suspect in the sexual assault and slaying of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion is probably still in the Southern California area, and may live, work or have family in the Stanton neighborhood from which the girl was kidnapped, according to Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona.

Retired National City police officer Merrell Davis told 10News that the man police are looking for may be the same person he helped to put behind bars 21 years ago.

There is no proof that Ricardo Navarro Guerrero (pictured, left) committed the vicious murder and rape of Samantha, but Davis said the convicted kidnapper and rapist's methods are eerily similar. "This guy's M.O. (modus operandi) was to approach children that were girls 5 to 7 years old. He would ask them to help him find his kitty. One girl said she had to go to school and that she didn't want to go with him, but he drug her into the car," Davis said.

Guerrero was arrested in 1981. He was convicted of sexual perversion involving a 7-year-old girl, and sentenced to up to eight years in a state mental hospital.

"In a period of two years, he admitted to hitting on young girls 16 times," Davis said.

Davis said that when he began to hear more about the Samantha case, he decided to check back in on Guerrero -- only to find out that he had broken his parole, and his whereabouts are unknown.

"San Diego and that region are not that far away. He was ranging all over the county (in 1981). He is missing now. He served time at Patton. Patton is in that area," he said.

Davis also said there is a resemblance between Guerrero and the composite sketch of the suspect in the Samantha case. Whether Guerrero committed the crime or not, San Diego must be put on alert, Davis said.

"This man was active in the past. He shouldn't be a parolee-at-large. The public should be aware of it," he said.

A spokesperson from the FBI said the agency knows about Guerrero, but said they cannot comment at this time. Guerrero's last known address was in La Mesa.

Several Men Questioned But No Arrests In Girl's Murder

Investigators Follow Hundreds Of Leads

POSTED: 12:46 p.m. PDT July 18, 2002
UPDATED: 9:41 p.m. PDT July 18, 2002

A statewide dragnet for the killer of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion has led to numerous people being questioned and some arrests for unrelated violations, but no one has been held in the kidnap-murder, a sheriff's official said.

Samantha Runnion "In the course of pursuing these leads, there have been numerous detentions, there have been a few arrests, there have been vehicles impounded," Orange County Assistant Sheriff George Jaramillo told reporters after media accounts of an arrest.

"None of that, however, is to be mistaken with there having been an arrest for the kidnapping and murder of Samantha Runnion," he said.

Jaramillo was responding to a flood of news reports about an incident in Fresno, 220 miles northwest of Los Angeles, in California's Central Valley.

California Highway Patrol officers stopped a car there and detained its driver after someone reported that the driver and the car fit the description of the person sought in the kidnap-killing, CHP Sgt. Ted Eichman said. The man was detained for failure to yield

"We sent out a statewide alert to all our officers and disseminated the poster to all our officers. We directed our officers to maintain vigilance in areas frequented by children, including parks and schools," said CHP Assistant Chief Art Acevedo.

The girl was abducted Monday in Stanton and her body was found Tuesday near a Riverside County highway. An autopsy determined she was sexually assaulted and died of asphyxiation, Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona said on Wednesday.

The findings showed that Samantha had been alive for several hours after being abducted, Carona said.

The sheriff said the killer may bear physical signs of a struggle.

Sketch of man suspected of kinapping Samantha Runnion "He will probably have unexplained injuries to his hands, arms and possibly face," said Carona, who noted that the White House had called to offer any FBI assistance in finding the killer.

The Sheriff's Department released a sketch and description of the kidnapper based on the account of a playmate who was with Samantha when she was kidnapped. FBI agent Richard Garcia said the girl was able to identify speech patterns, and as a result, investigators believe the man is a Hispanic American. He was described as having slicked-back black hair and a thin black mustache. He wore a powder blue button-down shirt.

"Don't sleep, don't eat, because we're coming after you," Carona warned the killer, saying he is likely both a serial rapist and serial killer.

A sexual predator who kills is going to do it again, Garcia said. The body was found Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the kidnapping.

"The way the body was found, the fact it was not buried, not hidden and such, and how it was left is almost like a calling card, like a challenge: 'I'm here and I'm coming back again.' This is the reason why we're saying this person is going to strike again," he said.

Garcia addressed the unknown killer directly during the televised news conference.

"The individual is in fact watching us right now. I want to tell you ... we will find you and we will bring you to justice," he said.

Samantha's abduction follows the high-profile cases of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart in Salt Lake City and 7-year-old Danielle van Dam and 2-year-old Jahi Turner in San Diego. Danielle's body was found and a neighbor is on trial. Elizabeth and Jahi remain missing.

Samantha's body was discovered Tuesday afternoon in neighboring Riverside County near the two-lane Highway 74 on the edge of the Cleveland National Forest, about 50 miles from Stanton. The body was spotted about 3 p.m. by two men in a ravine near a hang-gliding launch site.

Her grandmother identified the remains through photos from the site where the body was found.

Samantha and friend Sarah Ahn, 5, were sitting on a wall playing a board game about 150 feet from Samantha's home Monday evening when a man drove up in a two-door light green Honda or Acura after making a U-turn. The man got out and asked for help finding his puppy, then took off with the kicking and screaming girl.

Samantha's mother, Erin Runnion, and stepfather, Ken Donnelly, were at work and her grandmother, Virginia Runnion, was at home at the time of the kidnapping.

Samantha's biological father, Derek Jackson of Sunderland, Mass., was contacted by authorities and ruled out as a suspect, Runnion said earlier.

Runnion, who made an anguished plea for the return of her daughter Tuesday, stayed in seclusion after the body's identification.

The news spread fear in Stanton, a city of 38,000 southeast of Los Angeles.

Melissa Apodaca, 30, of Anaheim, brought her three children to Stanton on Wednesday to view a memorial for Samantha. She said she had made them watch newscasts about the abduction.

"They need to know this," she said.

Apodaca's daughter, Alecia, 10, said she was scared that the killer "would come around my house and hurt me and my brothers." Her 9-year-old brother, Edward, said he came "to pray for the girl and hope that she's happy up in heaven."

On the other posts Kim had posted sketches of various perps and they all looked similiar.

They kidnap/murders were taking place in various parts of the country.

That is why I found this part to be especially important.

Patton is in that area," he said.

..........

Considering that the sketch is from the testimony of a 5-year-old, there are some striking resemblances between the two pics ...... the nose, the shape of the mustache, the mouth, the small ears that are close-set to the face ..........

I pray for Samantha's family. What a horrendous way to lose your precious daughter. May God help them to find peace and comfort and may they feel His abiding love.

Seems like a very likely suspect.

"Guerrero's last known address was in La Mesa."

From looking at a map - El Cajon is on the way from Poway to La Mesa - if you take the back way - hwy. 67 to I 8.

P.M. Update: Motorist arrested for running from CHP officers

The Fresno Bee
(Published Thursday, July, 18, 2002, 1:40 PM)

A Los Angeles motorist was arrested today south of Fresno after he allegedly ran from California Highway Patrol officers who were checking a citizen's tip involving the kidnapping and killing of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion of Stanton in Orange County.

Fresno County sheriff's Lt. Greg Burton said there is no evidence that the man is Samantha's killer and that the man, whose identity was not immediatly disclosed, was only arrested for allegedly running away from the officers.

"At this time, we don't know if he is the man being sought," said Burton.

Burton said CHP officers were checking out a citizen's tip that a man matching the description of Smantha's kidnapper was at a truck stop at Central Avenue and Freeway 99 when they attempted to contact the man. The investigation is continuing.

I think other neighbors saw the perp as he drove away. I am pretty sure the picture is a composite from several accounts.

The eyebrows in the sketch aren't nearly as bushy as in the photo, and the face is significantly shorter in the sketch. Why don't they show some pictures of similar looking Hispanics to the witnesses -- including Guerrero.

Guerrero did not kill anybody in his earlier spree. Why now?

There was a guy on the radio the other day who, when he was a teenager, he hitched a ride with some guy. The guy forced him to have sex with him. The teenager was a witness at trial and the guy was sent up for 8 years. After his release he started killing his victims so there wouldn't be any witnesses. The guy was William Bonin, the Freeway killer. He supposedly killed at least 20 young boys after his release.

This guy is an animal. After you cage an animal they become beasts. They become monsters. They need to be put to sleep before they kill.

Maybe wrong guy.

Maybe not.

He is a covicted sex offender child predator who has skipped parole.

His face should be plastered everywhere anyways.

Maybe the person who killed did not want a live witness?

Maybe raping children not good enough for him anymore.
