Try "Footfall"
I think "Inferno" also by them (not the volcano story)

Look for "Footfall" written in the early-mid 80s.

Lots of stuff. In my post I was referring to something from a book called The Mote In God's Eye. This is a great book which I highly recommend.

The Mote in God's Eye was soon after Lucifer's Hammer IIRC.
