Gun-safety programs meant to teach youngsters to avoid risky exploration of the weaponry don't work, according to a report released today that calls instead for stricter gun-sale and product safety laws.

"Children, Youth and Gun Violence," from the nonprofit David and Lucile Packard Foundation, says that in experimental research settings youngsters who've been through "gun-avoidance" programs are just as likely as others to find and play with guns.

I can't remember the exact stats from the Kali Hunter Safety courses, but they are positive re lack of accidents. Not only for their teenager years but as young adults, the programs stay in the minds of those who have finished the course.

You and your people probably have the stats on your state's hunter safety programs.

I really feel that the stats from these programs will be like John Lott's stats re more guns = less crime. They will have years of hard retroactive and non manipulated data that will refute these gun grabbers.

Anyone notice the name of the program that doesn't work? "gun-avoidance" Don't teach them to "avoid" guns. Teach them to "respect" and know how to "use" a gun.

The Packard program..."Don't touch a gun, don't ever touch a gun."

MY program..."Hey kid, you wanna shoot the .308 next? How'd you like to be standing in front of that? Don't play around with this thing or it WILL kill you."

I smell a flawed study.

There us only 1 gun safety program for youngsters and that is Eddie Eagle. "Gun-avoidance" programs do not teach safety, they teach avoidance and that is simply ridiculous.

"But trying to teach safety by talking about 'right' from 'wrong' is not effective. I am sure it isn't, but teaching young people how to handle a gun, break it down, clean it and how and when to use it, is effective. Competitive shooting is one of the best sports a young boy/girl can train for. Marksmanship is one of the badges Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts work for. Responsibility is what you want in young people and this is one way to show them what it is all about. It is a shame Regina Dunn didn't provide for her son that part of his education; I bet he knew how to swim.

Join the NRA, be an intelligent marksman.

The Red Star Tribune doesn't print anything without inserting their own liberal agenda.

I laugh at them when they call my house,(monthly), to try to get me to subscribe.

My husband buys it on Sundays for the sports section. I use the rest of it to put under the dog's bowl and under the cat box.

In a recent National Review article, Neal Freeman, a friend of Packard's and chair of the Blackwell Corp., wrote that the foundation has become "radically pro-abortion." Last year, the foundation awarded $153,000 to the Bridging the Gap Foundation to publish "A Pocket Guide to Contraception," which details emergency contraception, sterilization and abortion methods for medical students, as well as $300,000 to a group lobbying for legalized abortion in Brazil.

Freeman said, "David's friends and admirers assume naively this money would support causes he was devoted to." However, foundation representatives said that "no one should be surprised by the groups and efforts being supported, since a number of those that received grants last year also received them when Mr. Packard was still alive." Curbing population growth was one of Mr. Packard's "major goals," Packard Foundation President Cole Wilbur said, citing a speech Packard gave in 1992 that emphasized the relationship between population pressures and environmental destruction.

It is probably about 97+% of the fatalities are gang related or intentional shootings by another family member or mom's latest boy friend.

Thank you for your comments. I'll vouch for your suggested methods of protecting kids from the dangers of firearms.

Yes, we must TEACH kids how to USE firearms SAFELY. Test those kids, and test them again, with several trips to the ranges with all types of firearms.

Yes, teach them the Bill of Rights, and why private gun ownership is vital to the perserverance of this country.

Yes, encourage them to place NRA stickers at public places, preferably next to gun control and other offensive stickers.

Finally, enjoy seeing them discipline their emotions as they know not to smirk at--or shriek around-- firearms.

Sticks out like a sore thumb. In other words, they didn't teach them how to handle a gun without killing themselves or someone else. They told them they were dangerous and not to touch them. That works so well with cigarettes, firecrackers and alcohol, they must have been sure it would work with guns (sarcasm).

And what were these "experimental research settings"...?

Yet countless anti-tobacco, -drug, and -sex ads do? Isn't that why the bureaucrats are constantly whining for more money for "education," so that they can make ads telling kids how bad it is to smoke? Or do drugs? Or have unprotected sex?

Or could it be that that is just a smoke screen for siphoning taxpayer money into Left-wing coffers?

When I see a statistic quoted I always look for missing information before I give it any credibility as an information source. In this case I am including the missing information in paretnheses in the quote.

"20,000 youngsters (under the age of ___)are killed or injured by guns every year in this country ...

That's why the report -- which says 20,000 youngsters are killed or injured by guns every year in this country -- calls for tighter restrictions on gun sales

Umm, isn't it already illegal to sell a gun to a minor?

Let us all note that the Packard Foundation has supported leftist ideologues for quite some time.

Let us ALSO note that the newspaper, accurately but incompletely, refers to the Packard foundation as 'non-profit.'

ALL FOUNDATIONS ARE NON-PROFIT!!

But NOT all foundations are left-wing supporters.

I have disposed of many a critter with a .22LR and have deliberately asked my children to shovel the remains into the woods.

They get the picture REAL fast.

None of them have EVER attempted to use or mis-use any of our weapons without parental control, permission, and guidance.

Yet.

But they are locked, too, and in a locked cabinet. (The guns, that is.)

The report appears in the foundation's latest Future of Children Journal.

All I needed to see was this comment in the article.

Sounds like something dreamed up by Hillary and Marion Wright Edelman.

Here are some of the grants they have given out.

Academy for Educational Development
$337,000 over two years for a variety of projects to increase access to emergency contraception for youth.

Linangan ng Kababaihan
$350,000 over three years for the project Softening the Ground
for Abortion Rights in the Philippines

Medical Students for Choice
$300,000 over two years for general support

National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action
$7,555,000 for the fourth year of Choice for America program
activities

National Abortion Federation
$4,000,000 over three years for a media campaign to promote
awareness of mifepristone and continue the medical abortion
education initiative

Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health
$120,000 over two years for a mobile clinic that provides family
planning services for homeless and uninsured adolescents in Santa
Clara County

Lyari Community Development Project
$160,000 over three years to popularize the small family concept
among low- and lower-middle-income communities to improve
their quality of life in Pakistan

I search of all their grants from last year (2001) shows about 99% deal with abortion/family planning/population control.

And all are extreme leftist plans.
