Chuck Keil, the consul general in Rome, complained to several State Department officials including Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage and Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Marc Grossman that congressional critics have been saying terrorists "were able to enter the United States due to lack of vigilance or downright negligence." "All of this smacks of the days of Senator Joe McCarthy, when a witchhunt conducted in the name of protecting Americans from the communist menace ruined the careers of Foreign Service Officers who had allegedly lost China to the Reds, or else helped Communist and Communist sympathizers obtain visas to enter the United States," he wrote.
After 60 years, it's about time we got the Communists out of State.

After 60 years, it's about time we got the Communists out of State. Amen to that. Geeze what a rats nest

It is almost enough to cause me to put on some tin foil and wonder if maybe someone in government(state) was in on 911.

I would have fired a few and stripped their pensions. These arrogant punks need to have some fear put into them.
They've been leading charmed lives.

Compared to anything in the State Department, Joe McCarthy was a saint.

The employees of the State Dept. need to be auditted. I wonder how many are inexplicably living way beyond their declared incomes.
Does anybody believe that all of that bribe money, that was paid to U.S. Embassy officials for visas, only passed through the hands of low-level government employees?

"State Department personnel think they are in a world of their own and can make remarks like this about elected members of Congress," Mr. Barr said. Of course they can make remarks like this about elected members of congress. They allegedly work for a "free country" that has rules about squelching free speech.
If they haven't done their jobs properly, fire them. If they call you a wrinkled up windbag, then take it like a man.

Well now with the release of the Verona intercepts it has become clear that Joe McCarthy was correct in his accusations.
Perhaps these consular officials would feel better representing some other nation which is more in line with their loyalties perhaps they could represent Lybia or Iraq. The job of an American Consul is to represent the US interests in foreign nations not to make policy or criticise policy. had there been the slightest whiff of criticism of the Clinton administration or any Democrat Congressthing during the period from 1993 to 2001 then these offials would have been immediately unemployed and facing a remorless vendetta.

Clintigula just spent eight years re-packing the DOS with communists and one worlders, and Bush doesn't seem to care.
He won't even boot "No Guns" Mineta, and he hired "Waco" Magaw for Pete's sake, so don't hold out hope of his looking into the DOS for commies and one worlders.

They're federal employees. They can never be fired.
They can be reassigned to cramped cubicles in windowless, rooms with 15W illumination, and no phones, computers, or responsibilities.

I wouldn't go that far... but they probably view it as "collateral damage."
