Governor Bush Meets with Florida Educators at Reading Conference
Kicking off the first annual Just Read, Florida! Leadership Conference, Governor Bush met with hundreds of Florida educators in Tampa on Tuesday. Conference attendees learned about the latest developments in reading research.
Over 500 Florida elementary school principles, reading teachers, and superintendents are participating in this 3-day conference. The conference includes sessions taught by some of the top reading experts in the country on the latest reading research, using student achievement data to individualize instruction, and success stories from Florida classrooms.
Governor Bush spoke to the group at the beginning of the conference, thanking Florida educators for their invaluable efforts to instill a life-long love of learning in Florida students.
Just Read, Florida! is an initiative to encourage the use of comprehensive and effective reading strategies in Florida classrooms so that every student is able to become a successful and independent reader. As part of Just Read, Florida!, Governor Bush has asked parents, businesses, and community members to get involved in helping to improve students' reading skills. Ultimately, FL hopes to see every child in Florida reading at or above grade level by 2012.
Consistent with the scientifically-based reading research in President Bush's Reading First program, Just Read, Florida! helped to earn Florida a federal grant to help schools and school districts improve students' reading achievement. Florida was one of only 3 states to receive this grant - $45.6 million the first year and a total of $300 million over six years.

Ultimately, FL hopes to see every child in Florida reading at or above grade level by 2012.
When Gov. Bush first announced this, above, even some of his biggest critics praised him for publicly taking on this bold goal.
BTW, it will not surprise me to see Gov. Bush win more and more votes from other FL teachers like myself.... For more information about his reading program and the training of teachers, click here:

That educator looks suspiciously like a 6-year-old. Actually, I'm sure that many First Graders could do as good a job as some of the "educators" we've got running around.

Now, now - think of your wife, the 2nd grade teacher! :)

As I stated in the photo caption, she is a pre-K student (4 years old). :)
