"We're raising all the posts to the power of two in the hopes of breaking the internet.. Then we are gonna show up at algor's house and ask him what's wrong." Quote of the day.

(I kinda figured we would show up at his house with like a nailgun and a roll of twine, and ask him if he could fix the internet for us.)

OK - But what about the freezing?
I remember my chemistry teacher saying that hot water cools faster than cold water because the molecules are buzzing around faster so they cool faster. But as they cool, wouldn't they then become the temperature the cold water was when we started, the molecules would slow down and then cool at the same rate?

It was the question we've all been afraid to ask. Thanks for putting your neck on the line. ^

Why does hot water freeze faster than cold water? Short answer: It doesn't. Where did you hear that?
It will COOL faster than cold water (degrees change per minute)....... until it gets cold. But put a tray of cold water and a tray of hot water into the same freezer, and the cold water will be ice first.
Every time.

I remember my chemistry teacher saying that hot water cools faster than cold water because the molecules are buzzing around faster so they cool faster. Good to see dedicated civil servants contributing to maintaining America's lead in scientific ignorance. Clearly, if hot water cooled faster, then at some point it would catch-up and when it actually got colder the cold water would cool faster! Kinda like Galileo's famous thought experiment, refuting Aristole's assertion that heavy bodies fell faster than light ones.
I think experimental evidence of this phenomenon is thin on the ground. See http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_098b . Cecil claims that hot water takes 10-15 minutes longer to freeze regardless of whether it's hot tap water or kettle boiled. Sorry.
Drives me crazy too.

It means that thread will open in a new window. It's very good when you're chatting on several different threads at the same time. It can be set to this in your preferences. I hope this helps and you don't take too much abuse on this thread. You know about FReepers sense of humor, I'm sure.
This week when I've tried opening threads, it's opened in another existing window rather than a new window.
Growing pain quirks?

Thanks! Now I can quit wondering about it, too. I think the carats weren't there until FR changed its format a couple of months ago.

I see the carets (^) after most Source fields such as:

My browser, IE 6.0, displays a caret, "^", at the end of every thread title on the "http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/browse" page. Go to your Control Panels window.
Open up Internet Settings.
Click on "Oddball Settings"
Open the "July" tab.
Select "Tuesday" from the pop-up menu.
Look about two-thirds of the way down.
Find the one that says "Free Republic"
Double-click it.
Find the window called "Thread Titles".
Look for a checkbox setting called "Display a caret after every title".
Uncheck this checkbox.
Close the window.
Save changes.
If it asks "Are you Sure?", click the YES button.
Close the other window.
When it asks you to put your Windows Install CD in the drive, do so.
Ignore the warning about Illegal operations. You're not doing medical stuff here.
When the CD mounts, click "OK".
When it asks if you want to reboot now, do so.
Wait for a re-boot.
When it asks for your credit card number, type it in.
Run IE again.
Log onto Free Republic.
voila! No carets !!
...at least that's what worked for ME....

Bring $200 in unmarked $20 dollar bills to the pay phone in the New London pizzeria in Groton CT, 2 PM tomorrow and maybe we can talk. Be alone or you'll never see you precious sock again.
