How does this...
As a matter of fact, most of the [WW2] soldiers in
the US Armed Forces were German and British.
...have anything to do with this?
Most soldiers had German and British descendents.
I would venture to say that most WW2 soldiers
in the US armed forces were Americans. And I would
also venture to say that the descendents of American
soldiers in WW2 were themselves American, and not
German or British.
In the off chance that you meant ancestors rather
than descendents, I would tell you having German
and British ancestors does not mean that most
American soldiers were thus German or British.
Or are you saying that there are no Americans
at all, since everyone's ancestors came from somewhere
else?

If Jews are Jews because they have Jewish ancestors, then Americans are German if they have German ancestors.

None are so blind as those who don't want to see.

The dunderheads in the news media are again displaying their complete ignorance of history. They actually seem to believe that the fact that partially-Jewish men fought in the Wehrmacht is news. It isn't. It's been witten about and discussed for decades.
The racial classification boards that were established by the 1935 Nuremberg Laws considered a person with two Jewish grandparents a "Mischling" or a person of mixed race (known as a first degree Mischling). A person with only one Jewish grandparent was a second-degree Mischling. There were perhaps 150,000 of these people of "mixed race" who fought in the Nazi army.
There weren't "many" of them (taking into account the total numbers involved), and they were not considered Jews. They were considered people of "mixed race," which is what Mischling means. The facts won't prevent an idiot like Cosby from trying to make it appear otherwise, however.

I think this was also true of Adm. Nimitz.

150,000 of first and second degree Mishlings? or 150,000 of second degree Mishlings?
So although there were many (150,000 definitely qualifies as many) partial-Jews fighting in the Nazi Army there were very few "pure" jews fighting with them.
source says ~20 million nazi soldiers so ~150,000 partial-jews would be less than 1% of nazi soldiers Thanks for the info.

There weren't, so far as I know, any "pure Jews" fighting. The 150,000 figure is for all Mischlings (that is, people of mixed Jewish ancestry). It includes all first-degree and second-degree Mischlings.
I believe that the second-degree Mischlings made up about 90,000 of the total figure; the first-degree made up 60,000. I may be wrong about that, though, so don't take my word on it.
Thanks for your interest.

A person with only one Jewish grandparent was a second-degree Mischling. If their maternal grandmother was Jewish, then they would be Jewish, irrespective of the ethnicity or religious orientation of the other three grandparents.

I think it's interesting about the timing of this kind of thing. The liberals have decided to align themselves with the Muslims and now must demonize the Jews who they were previously aligned with. No more Jews as victims, they are now the Nazis and the Muslims are the new fad.

No big surprise there were people of all groups on all sides in WWII. Jews played as large a role in the creation of fascist theory as did Christians. Mussolini's top advisors were Jewish as was the editor of his fascist newspaper. A lot of people of all faiths did not have a clue where this ideology was headed.

What am I. My great grandfather was an Austrian Jew who stowed away around 1880-1890 when he was 12 years old. He was taken from New York somehow to Alabama where he was raised by protestants, I think. I am not sure if he converted or not. His son, my grandfather was Baptist (foot-washing I think). I tried to figure our by Nuremburg laws what I am, but am still unsure. parsy.

I wasn't giving you the Nurnberg law definitions. I was giving you the Orthodox definition -- A Jew is someone whose mother was a Jew or who has undergone a proper conversion. So being Jewish by birth only depends on the matrilineal line of descent. Fathers, grandfathers, father's mother, etc. are irrelevant.
To: vance
Not quite. There were a number of Jewish officers serving in the Wehrmacht with the full knowledge of the SS Race and Resettlement Office and of Hitler himself. Typically, these were decorated veterans. Their classification under the Nuremburg laws was 'full-blooded Jew'. Outside of the Wehrmacht they would be in great peril, but as long as they wore the uniform, they were safe.

I don't remember on what TV station I saw this story (maybe 60 minutes) but there were Jews interviewed who said that they joined the Nazi's to protect their families. They also said that their "higher ups" were aware that they were Jews but because of the friendship that had developed between them, the Jews were told to keep quiet and "there would be no trouble" (in other words, they wouldn't be reported and sent to concentration camps).
To: Lessismore
That's right.

Ihave many friends and co-workers that are Americans but are of Mexican decent.I may call them a silly Mexican in jest but they are still American. When I grew up it was in a german community. Many spoke english as a second language even though they were born here in America.Too many times we are quick to label someone because of their heritage IMO.One note though, the community I grew up in differentiated between an israili jew,German jews and russian jews.Just my 2 cents worth.

Your grandfather would have been sent to the camps.
Your dad of course was a Jew for purposes of this book. Bet hed be surprised.
Its a major flaw of attaching significance to the presence of Jews in Hitlers army. These are largely the guy on the church pew behind you, who happened, like your dad, to have a Jewish grandpa. Its largely a reflection of the assimilation of Jews into German culture in the 19th century.
