Before taking anybody's word that America is getting fatter go here:
http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/
This is the tool now used to define people as obese or not. Notice it's a flat comparison of height and weight. No longer do you take into account things like age, gender, skeletal frame type, muscle mass or body fat % (which is truly the only measurement that counts for determining if your obese). The reason our obese nubmers are sky rocketing is that they've fudged the definition to the point where anyone waying more than X (regardless of how they got there, even if they're bulging muscles) is obese. Bad science inspired bad laws.

Back in the mid-1980's when I was in the service, they measured your wrist (along w/height, age, m/f) to take into account larger skeletal frames.
Depending on the wrist measurement people with the same height could vary 20 pounds (or more?) and still be within guidelines.
Glad to say I have large wrists and missed out on the 'fat boy' program by five pounds. (I'm sure the PC crowd in the military doesn't refer to it as 'fat boy program' any longer LOL)...
I see your valid point on the 'skyrocketing numbers'. Keeps them employed tho, eh?

Actually I like this chart. It shows me in the normal weight for my height and to tell you the truth I feel I need to be about 15 lbs lighter to be as thin as I used to be.
Course hubby says if I lose anymore I'm going to be nothing but bones. Guess he didn't like my size when we first met. ;)
