Palestinian police chief quits -Palestinian sources
GAZA, July 4 (Reuters) - Palestinian police chief Ghazi al-Jabali decided on Thursday to resign to prepare to stand in a presidential election next January, Palestinian security sources said.
Confusion has been mounting over the future of Jabali and West Bank preventive security chief Jibril Rajoub, despite denials by the Palestinian Authority that President Yasser Arafat tried on Wednesday to remove them.
"Major General Ghazi al-Jabali decided to resign from his post to prepare himself to run for the upcoming presidential election," a senior security source said. He did not say whether Jabali had already submitted his resignation.
U.S. President George W. Bush said last month that no move would be made towards creating a Palestinian state unless Palestinians elected new leaders "uncompromised by terror" and implemented reforms, including overhauling the security forces.
Arafat has announced plans to hold presidential and legislative elections next January. Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said on Thursday decisions on reforms of the security forces would be taken and announced in the next few days.
