Martha Stewart Cancels TV Appearance

NEW YORK, Jul 02, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- There will be no grilled Martha Stewart on "The Early Show" on CBS Wednesday.

The domestic diva cancelled her appearance on the CBS morning news program late Tuesday after being told she would be asked about the investigation into her stock dealings.

She had been booked to talk about ice box desserts.

It means there will be no repeat of her memorable appearance on the program last week, when Stewart continued to chop cabbage for a salad as host Jane Clayson asked her questions about alleged insider trading.

"I want to focus on my salad, because that's why we're here," Stewart said then.

Stewart called a CBS executive to ask if she would be questioned about the investigation late Tuesday, and was told she would. She later called back to bow out, said a CBS insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Stewart realizes that as "a premier news network," CBS is compelled to talk about the stocks, said Allyn Magrino, a spokeswoman for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

"As she explained in her previous interview on CBS last week, she is unable to comment or offer any other information at this time out of respect for the investigatory process," Magrino said. "This inherent conflict unfortunately prevents Martha from appearing tomorrow in her lifestyle 'how to' segment."

Congressional investigators are examining whether Stewart had inside information when she sold nearly 4,000 shares of the biotech company ImClone a day before the Food and Drug Administration announced it had decided not to consider its experimental drug for combating colorectal cancer.

There was no immediate word on what this meant for the future of Stewart's weekly appearances on "The Early Show."

While it offers Stewart a chance for weekly network exposure, her syndicated show gives her plenty of controlled TV opportunities. And with "The Early Show" mired in third place in the morning ratings, Stewart is arguably more important to CBS than vice versa.

I don't care much for Martha, never have, but this smells of a witch (and I do mean "witch") hunt.

Martha is in a bad way. If the reports are right (IF), then she let greed get the better of her.

If (IF) she let greed get the better of her, she better plea bargain and retire.

Of course, she will have to disgorge (stick her finger down her throat) any ill-gotten gains.

Yeah really. Didn't I hear that they were going to call her before congress? What the hell is that about?

There is a story on Drudge that a note has surfaced that MIGHT back up her claim of the sixty dollar sell order.

Just one of those things, kat ... early a.m. rerrun of Martha Stewart Living last week ... her guest segment featured her company's GENERAL COUNSEL ... the person in charge of all things legal, she said. He was going through the steps of making the BEST Bloody Mary ... she, all the while, couldn't keep from laughing. She thought it too funny that her general counsel (the person in charge of all things legal, she said), was whipping up this drink. He was serious, she was laughing.

So he got to the point where he was going to add fresh garlic, but said to her that he knew she was going to tell him that he wasn't doing it perfectly, so he gave her the task. She instructed. Upshot of it was ... delicious drink ... she doesn't particularly go for Bloody Marys often, but she favors them ON AN AIRPLANE!

Ya think that was what she was doing when she called her broker from her airplane, which kicked everything into gear?

That was some segment.

The domestic diva cancelled her appearance on the CBS morning news

Is Martha a "Diva" or a "Maven"? I believe every story about Martha I've read uses one of those terms or the other.

Are journalists now so lazy they can't click on "tools>thesaurus", or do they just like sounding like repetitive idiots?
