BOSTON -- Two young children were found slain on Tuesday and later their mother was fatally shot by police after threatening officers with a knife, according to a police spokeswoman.

Police responding to a domestic disturbance at the home in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood found the unidentified boy and girl -- their throats slashed -- in the basement at 3:50 p.m., police spokeswoman Mariellen Burns said in a brief statement.

I guess they didn't enjoy seeing murdered kids and the shooting the mother. Don't blame them, but I guess I would have headed to a bar not checked into a hospital. They likely had no choice. PC police psychologist orders no doubt.

If cops shoot a woman with a knife, there are hordes of people who can't understand why they would use such overwhelming force. Then they viscerate the cops. If the woman had just murdered inocents, it seems to be OK. My point? Shoot anybody who comes at you with a weapon. All a cop needs to know is whether he is truly being threatened.

My heart goes out to the dead babies of course....and where's the Dad(s)..... but how horrible for these policemen, that in the performance of their duties, they had to kill a woman.

The knife against a gun defense only works if you have no other recourse, if you're a civilian of course. Realistically, a baton could have been utilized to smash the wrist of the assailant. However, police are taught to draw service weapons at the least hint of danger, as they probably should be.

However, a live capture would have resulted in a life sentence, which gives the perp more time to think about what they've done before meeting the Creator.

There IS the concern about the cost of such sentence, but they do make license plates amongst other such mundane work..

That basement must have been one God-awful place to have to do an investigation.
