Apple dumps on 70,000 users

What are these people like?

By Andrew Thomas, 02/07/2002 10:16:42 BST

APPLE'S MASTERLY BUSINESS SENSE has once again come to the fore. Trumpeting the company's takeover of German pro audio outfit Emagic, which will now operate as an Apple division, the company was obviously concerned that Emagic was far too successful and has immediately taken the axe to 35 per cent of its revenues.

Apple says that Mac based products account for over 65 per cent of Emagic's current revenues and that all Windows-based products will be discontinued at the end of September. With a claimed 200,000 users worldwide, that means roughly 70,000 of them will either be coughing up the readies for Apple kit, or moving to other high end music packages such as Sonar and Cubase that run under Windows.

We know we haven't always been terribly kind about Apple's business sense, but it's stuff like this that beggars belief – who in their right mind would chop 35 per cent of their revenues in a bid to sell more Macs?

A source told the INQ: " This is a terrible blow to the best audio sequencer on the market and unless apple releases OSX for x86 then 70,000 PC users of Logic - (musicians, composers, studio engineers, students etc) have been shafted. on the Logic User Group at yahoo PC users are talking class actions and spitting chips.

There's more discussion of this debacle at this place, and this place. µ

Phooey! Sour Grapes! When a cross platform software program decides to dump it's Mac users [a la Quicken et al] you don't hear people crying and sobbing about the poor Mac user. Payback Time. Apple buys Emagic and it's flagship product Logic fair and square. They can do with it what they want. With it's recent acquisition in the video editing and compositing business it is clear that Apple is making a big push in the 'creative' market. What goes around yadda yadda yadda ,,, ,,,

. . . or moving to other high end music packages such as Sonar and Cubase that run under Windows.

EMagic Logic is a high-end music package. Dreadfully difficult to master, but powerful almost beyond belief.

They're dumping on 70,000 PC users. They are competitors after all.

Other products on PC will likely offer cheap cross-overs, they'll have the option of running what they have now, switching to other software or, when it comes time to upgrade, switching to a Mac machine.

If Mac can make a marketly superior product on OS X, then that might bring 'em over to their platform.

In the future:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Jobs is evil!

Apple is a monopoly!

Apple doesn't innovate, they just steal other's ideas!

How can the PC world survive against the Mac juggernaut!

Oh, cruel world!

PC's are good too! For artistic things. There might be fewer of them like,... um,... lamas! No,... BMWs!

Yea thats it. PCs are like BMWs. That's why they're more expensive! But nicer. Not that lamas aren't nice. Good grief everyone likes lamas. The point I'm trying to...

Your gay aren't you?

Apple has been on an acquisition spree for several months, buying 'best of breed' audio and video companies like Emagic.

The MacWorld Expo in New York later this month should have several interesting announcements about Apple's plans for all of this new software.

Who cares? Cubase VST blows Logic Audio out of the water. Apple is irrelevant, although a lovely platform.

It' obvious that MAC has finally admitted their lot in life and is trying to shore up their position in the graphics business and is jettisoning any claims to being a mainstream computer.

I, for one, applaud them for applying a little business sense...for once.

What's funny about this is that there are over 200,000,000 users of Microsoft Windows worldwide (this is a conservative estimate). That means that at least 99.965% of Windows users are totally unaffected by this and likely don't even know what this Emagic is!

So here we have the Apple freaks crowing about how "Microsoft is getting a taste of their own medicine" and practically nobody on the Windows side is even noticing. It's like lobbing a snowball at the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk and then telling your friends how you "really socked it to the U.S. Navy." Pretty pathetic.

Give them their moment of (tepid) triumph. Frankly, it's more exciting watching mold form on bread.

It doesn't read like that to me. What we have here is an article taking APPLE to task for failing to maintain the windoze version of some software they bought.

The entire premise of the article is biased, unrealistic, pointless and inane.

Some commentatiors have pointed this out. They are not necessarly "Apple freaks" nor are they "crowing".

I, like you, see this as a truly inconsequential matter to the vast majority of wondoze users as well as to the vast majority of Mac users.

There, I guess I have really "socked it" to you!

..... who in his right mind would chop 35 per cent of his revenues in a bid to sell more Macs?

The owner of that right mind, perhaps?

Who, coincidentally happens to be the creator, innovator, producer and manufacturer [And inventor of the the term] of the world's most phenomenally advanced "Personal Computer."

Cubase SX is even better.

My friends and I composed these techno tunes on Cubase...

Took me about a month to come to grips with Logic. Of course I worked with Performer for years. With Logic I was able to customize my setups to emulate my Performer working method.,p>Logic kicks the hell out of Cubase IMO.

Logic smokes Cubase......and Performer for that matter.

Logic, of course, ripped off the Cubase scheme and integrated it with their Atari configuration.
