GALLUP, N.M. -- A Gallup police sergeant was attacked by his police dog Monday, according to a lieutenant for the department.

According to Lt. John Allen, Sgt. Gabe Cebada suffered broken bones to one hand, puncture wounds on his right hand and severe lacerations.

Allen said Cebada was attacked while taking the dog to Albuquerque for regular training.

Cebada reportedly stopped at a rest stop on Interstate 40 near Acoma Pueblo to let the dog relieve itself. Allen said that's when the dog attacked for some unknown reason.

Cebada drove himself to the Acoma Indian Health Service Hospital for treatment.

Allen said Cebada was able to get the dog into the cage in the back of the car, and it was taken to a Gallup animal hospital.

That's what happens when PD's as most now do, purchase, for a mighty pretty penny, plug and play dogs from Belgium/German/Czech/even US breeders/trainers. 90 day acclimation/"finish" training does not build the bond a K9 team must have to function efficiently and safely. Most just do not devote the time to build the team properly. All the time they "save" not having to work the fundamentals, is time lost building the love and desire to please the Handler which is absolutely necessary in a K9's motivation.
ARRRRGGGHHHH amatuers!

Sounds like he waited too long to make the rest stop. Never train a dog to attack and then make him hold it too long!
