Katie Uses NY Times Editorial to Bait JC Watts
The Today Show
Posted on 07/02/2002 4:28:57 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest
In her just-finished interview with JC Watts, Katie Couric employed a tried-and-true technique of liberal journalists trying to preserve an illusion of objectivity. Instead of using her own words to attack the Republican party, Katie threw into JC's face a bitterly partisan editorial from the NY Times. She then asked JC, with a look like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, whether he agreed with the NY Times. Here's the NY Times editorial quote that Katie threw at JC:
"Mr. Watts was welcomed into the fold in 1994 by a virtually all-white party establishment that was eager to put a black face on conservative Gingrich-era policies that were hostile to minorities.
"But Mr. Watts, who grew up in a harshly segregated section of Oklahoma known as Little Dixie, was more intimate with the effects of discrimination and more sympathetic to affirmative action than party ideologues could stand.
"He was also sharply critical of the party for alienating black voters and for not encouraging minority lawmakers to aspire to leadership positions."

A good example of how liberals in the media can provide cover for each other. The Times can speak its partisan mind in its editorial. Katie can echo the theme, but by quoting the Times rather than making the words her own, she maintains, for the unwary, a veneer of objectivity.

And what was J.C.'s response. I'm sure he was polite, he always is, but I'm also sure he tried to squash that BS.
If the perky Katie still wants something big up her butt I wear a size 13 boot. But I'd rather give it to her buddy Matt Liar.

Of course the NY Slimes fails to mention exactly which "conservative Gingrich-era policies ... were hostile to minorities." They can't enumerate them, they just say they were hostile to minorities because, well, it WAS Gingrich, after all. Typical.
The veneer has worn off. Any thinking American knows how partison Couric and The NY Slimes are. The problem is that only half the voting population can be considered thinking Americans.
The quote the Perky One threw in Watts' face is visciously racist, btw.

JC didn't go for the bait. His response was along lines: "what Newt and the Republicans did was positive. Black Americans don't want a tax increase. Even Democrats are taking credit for the balanced budget, and welfare reform has been a huge success."

Propaganda. Just like the state-controlled newsmedia under the Soviet Union. Soooooooo boring.
I've never watched Katie Courick, BTW--caught her a time or two while turning the TV on or off--when she came on, it went off.

visciously = viciously

Corick is so obvious.

We can't ask Couric to stop shopping for ten seconds and write a question...come on.

JC didn't go for the bait. Ha! Didn't think he would. He's very composed and well spoken. She must have thought the po' black Okie would crumble under the pressure of Her Perkiness' slick East Coast intimidation.

"I've never watched Katie"
Whew, I was beginning to worry - it took until the 7th reply for a post along these lines to appear. As regular readers of my "bias on the morning shows" postings are aware, these threads aren't official until a fellow FReeper states something a la: "never watched/who is? [insert name of biased talking head]"; "are they still on?"; "I only watch Fox"; and the classic "why do you waste your time watching those idiots?"
Once again, your fearless if somewhat masochistic FReeper, reporting back from the front lines of the media bias wars.

Couric: I'm not a racist but other people are and they say ....."

visciously = viciouslyViscuously racist might work too. Hee hee.

Exactly! Perfectly stated. You just KNOW that is her attitude, as well as that of her comrads colleagues.

Couric: "I'm not a racist but I play one on TV..."

When Ann Coulter had her smack down with Katie last week, wouldn't it have been nice if Ann had simply asked Katie to admit that she was a liberal Democrat? I imagine that Katie would probably have reiterated her bit about "I'm conducting the interview, and it's your views we're interested in", but I think the point would have been made.

I thought a couple of years ago NBC put a camera in Katie's colon because the were finally admitting what everyone already knew...
That Katie talks out of her a$$.

Reminds me of a project manager I had who asked me to go through a stack of applications and throw out the ones that MIGHT be black. "It's not that I am a racist but people above me might be and they might....". My response "So you aren't a racist but you are a p****y". He slinked back into his office. Ended up hiring some incompetent moron but he WAS white.

Good for you. You've picked up on an increasingly used tactic by the leftist media.
Another example was when Katie introduced Ann Coulter with this line.
"You've been called everything from a pundit extraordinaire to a right-wing tele-bimbo,".
Notice that Katie didn't say this directly but quote somebody else.
