UEBERLINGEN, Germany, Jul 02, 2002 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX) -- A Russian charter jet that collided in a fireball with a two-pilot cargo plane over southern Germany was carrying 44 children, a travel agency said Tuesday.
The Bashkirian Airlines Tu-154 from Moscow was bound for Barcelona, Spain, when it hit a Boeing 757 from the DHL delivery service at an altitude of about 12,000 meters (36,000 feet) late Monday, German officials said. All aboard both planes were believed to have died.
In Moscow, Tatiana Ostapenko said her travel agency helped organize a group of 49 travelers for the flight - 44 children and five adults accompanying them. German officials quoted the German Embassy in Moscow as saying that a total of 57 passengers and 12 crew were aboard the charter flight.
"We are in shock," Ostapenko said. "I haven't lost a single child for 20 years in my work in this business."
