Mayor Bloomberg has given his endorsement to a City Council bill that would have New York recognize gay marriages from other states - a move that Speaker Gifford Miller calls "simply the right thing to do."

With all due respect, Miller and the mayor are wrong on this one.

.....an issue in which legislative involvement on a local level serves no meaningful purpose - save to cater to vocal special interests. .....

This bill serves as an incentive to boycott NY City, to not patronize stores, hotels, restaurants, convention centers, plays, movies, etc. And let them know the reason why.

The thing is, this opens a whole can of worms. If gay narriages become recognized then polygamists and polyandrists will demand recognition too.

Whatever. The New York City Council has no authority here, but the prognosis isn't good.

No state (including Vermont) has "gay marriage". That is to say legally called and legally equvalent to marriage. If even one state does, then other states will have no choice but to recognize such "marriages". Just as various states have slightly different restrictions regarding lower age limits and cousin marriages, but recognize marriages from other less restrictive states.

It can't be quarantined to "gay-friendly" areas. At the very least, it could tie up the courts for years.

(Let's not tell 'em that legalization and recognition of a marriage is the function of the state government.....)

The Defense of Marriage Act allows states to not recognize "gay marriages" recorded in other states. This law was written specifically to prevent the Supreme Court of Hawaii from creating a right for "gay marriages" that other states would be required to recognize.

Similar issues surrounded polygamy and the admission of Utah as a state. The existing states did not want Utah admitted so long as Utah allowed polygamous marriage, because they did not want to have to recognize plural marriages. As a result, Utah banned new polygamous marriages in order to gain admission.

There can't be a test case as to the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act until some state passes a "gay marriage" bill. Something to do with the constitution not authorizing congress to regulate marriage. This is going to be a long fight.

As for polygamy, so many people these days are de facto polygamists that it just might sail on through on the coattails of the "gay" business. In fact it's more common than homosexuality.
