I've started to make a list of the correct definitions to some commonly used phrases. I thought everyone here would like to join in. Then we could publish this list someplace.

________________

In the Army:
1. “Friendly Fire”. When soldiers mistakenly shoot at others on their own side. Friendly fire isn’t friendly at all.

At the Office:
2. Requisition (Purchase Order) Approval Process. Any approval process is actually a disapproval process. The person who make out the requisition approved it, the rest are trying to find a reason to disapprove it.

Government and Polity:
3. Tax Loophole (US). An exception to the tax code created by the Legislature and voted into law, later found to be “unfair” by the same Legislature. [is there an equivalent UK expression?]

4. Fairness. No such thing. Like “common sense”, fairness is based on what is familiar to you, on your ethics and morals. More important are stable families and good parents.

5. Common Sense. See “Fairness”

6. Liberal (modern usage). The belief that people cannot be trusted to do things for themselves and others, who know better, should them the people what to do. Socialism, Communism. Traces its roots to the French Revolution, Carl Marx, etc.

7. Liberal (ancient usage). The belief that people ought to be free; to think, speak and act without harassment from government, in accord with the Ten Commandments. Currently “conservative” fits this definition.

8. Conservative (modern usage). The belief that people ought to be free; to think, speak and act without harassment from government, in accord with the Ten Commandments.

Human Rights. As objects don't have rights and, as R. Kirk points out, governments and organizations have Powers and not rights....in essence all rights are Human by definition. It came into prominance from Woodrow Wilson setting up the term as a trump to the cconcept of Property Rights.
