Former solicitors general on both sides of the aisle are urging the Democrat-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee to back off its request for confidential internal memos regarding one of President Bush's judicial nominees.
The committee asked for the documents as part of the confirmation process of D.C. Court of Appeals nominee Miguel Estrada, who was nominated 412 days ago.

I'm just speechless ... and for me that's hard to do!
They are trying to stop this Hispanic from getting on the federal bench because they think Bush would appoint him to the Supreme Court and would thereby show the republicans as being friendly to Hispanics? Is that it ...?? This is insane!

More evidence of the DemocRATs' contempt for an independent, non-politicized judiciary.

Leahy knows he will eventually lose this one but doesn't care because it gives him cover to delay a vote on Estrada.
Since he can't turn down Estrada politically, tying up the confimation is the next best thing.
