Steele Chosen as Ehrlich Running Mate
2002-07-01
By JOHN BIEMER
Associated Press Writer
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Rep. Robert Ehrlich has chosen state Republican Party Chairman Michael S. Steele as his running mate in the race for governor, a campaign spokesman said Monday.
Ehrlich was to announce his choice of Steele at 10 a.m. in Annapolis, said Ehrlich spokesman Paul Schurick.
Steele, 43, has been head of the state GOP for two years. He is known as a hard-hitting partisan willing to criticize Democrats he says have grown soft and arrogant in their years in power in Maryland.
Steele recently filed ethics complaints against state Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller after Miller contacted two state Court of Appeals judges and criticized an interim decision they made in legislative redistricting lawsuits.
Steele is a charming and affable leader who has worked to broaden the appeal of the GOP to blacks and other minorities.
In 1998, he ran for state comptroller, but lost to Democrat William Donald Schaefer.
Steele is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Georgetown University in Washington. He founded The Steele Group, a business and legal consulting firm.
He lives with his wife and two sons in Landover Hills.

Great move by Ehrlich. I was surprised that Kathleen Kennedy Townsend did not pick an African American as her running mate. Democrat Isaiah Legett (sp?) of the Montgomery County Council was certainly the favorite of many prominent Democrats (did he take himself out of the running?). Whatever the reason, I have to think Ehrlich will attract more black voters, especially black men, than any Republican has been able to in a long time. If the GOP could win 25-30% of the black vote on a regular basis they would achieve parity in Maryland.

He didn't simply criticize. He was instrumental in having Glendenning's extremely gerrymanded new districts overturned and redrawn by the court.

Oh gawd...is it possible we'll have a Kennedy as a Governor??

Where I live in Maryland there will be TWO Kennedys on the ballot. Kathleen KENNEDY (daughter of Bobby) Townsend and Mark KENNEDY Shriver. Will this madness never end?

Great choice. A politically great move in that Steele will help get the black vote, plus he is probably more conservative than Ehrlich.

Michael Steele is KKTs worst nightmare!

Steele is more conservative than Ehrlich. He is pro-life without reservation. This is already being spun by local news outlets as a negative, but it's a positive with conservatives.

But this is one party state so there's no doubt that the Kennedys will win. It's the way of life in Socialist Maryland.

I did some scutt work one afternoon with Steele in the Prince George's Rebublican office about 5 years ago. He stuck me as an honest man, informed, conservative and sharp. (Plus when he talked about his kids, his face just glowed! I'm a sucker for dads that love their kids.)
I've run into Erlich a few times and he didn't have a clue what I was asking him about.(Clinton, China, Bill Gertz, Treason) He changed the subject every time.
Hoping in time Steele will replace Commie Morella or the short one in the senate.

** Steele will help get the black vote**
This was already being spun Monday by KKT's campaign manager on WBAL as nothing more than a blatant political move. Steele will soon be portrayed (portrait + betrayed) by race-hustlers as an Uncle Tom.

You try doing a radio show with Michael like I do and you will see that this guy has balls bigger than church bells. I remember when Michael told me that he was going to sue the governor over redistricting, there where people in the party that said Michael was crazy that he would never win, Well Michael did win and I think he would make a great LT Governor and you are right when Michael speaks of his kids especially Michael Jr. he always breaks out in a smile and one time I had to do the show on my own so Michael could take his son on a field trip, he is just that type of guy. We just have to make sure Bob and Michael win this thing hands down.

I don't think he lives in Morella's district, but a future US senator...now there's an idea. Maybe he'll be Mryland's governor some day.
