Some new laws taking effect Monday:
CRIME:
In Idaho, the unlawful killing or injury of a human fetus will be considered a crime of murder, manslaughter or aggravated battery. The law does not outlaw abortions, but critics worry it could eventually be used to limit women's right to have abortions. In South Dakota, anyone convicted of injuring a baby by shaking it will face up to 25 years in prison.
SMOKING:
Smoking will be banned in most workplaces and enclosed public places in South Dakota, including most restaurants. Virginia will prohibit smoking in public schools at all times, even after student activities have ended.
CHILD PROTECTION:
Indiana is toughening penalties for possession of child pornography and distribution of it on the Internet. South Dakota is updating its anti-pornography law so it applies to computers.
MEN:
New Hampshire is establishing a commission to study issues affecting men.
RACIAL PROFILING:
Utah is authorizing the collection of racial data from drivers so authorities can study whether racial profiling by police is a problem. Virginia is instituting mandatory training for police on how to avoid racial profiling.

They missed Oklahoma's new smoking law. It begins July 1 (tomorrow), although it won't be "enforced" until sometime in August.

...critics worry it could eventually be used to limit women's right to have abortions. Aw, now that'd be a dad-blamed shame, now wouldn't it?

"RACIAL PROFILING:

I think Utah and Virginia could solve the problem without a study. Just insist that everyone wear burkas and veils (men and women) so the race or sex of a criminal won't be unveiled (pun intended) until the perpetrator is caught and arrested (if ever).
I also think Utah and Virginia should outlaw broadcasting any description of a perpetrator of a crime that might enable anyone to discern that person's ethic affiliation. I think if the police get a witness description of a criminal that indicates that the person is a black or hispanic male, 5'9" tall, 175 pounds, wearing a read shirt, bluejeans and Nike felony fliers, that information should be sterilized to read, "suspect is of medium height and build and casually dressed". No one gets their feelings hurt and no crimes are solved.......just what the left wants.
Sheeesh?!?!?!?!?!

Thanks for the post. ABCNews neglected to report the national motto "In God We Trust" is going up on Virginia school walls tomorrow -- to be read just before students pause for a moment of silence then recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Forgive me, sometimes sticking it to the libs is simply too much fun.
