SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - Two young children died while they were left alone in a hot car for more than three hours by their mother, who was having her hair done, police said Saturday.
The mother was being held on an open charge of murder pending a review by prosecutors, the Southfield Police Department said. Police did not release the 25-year-old Detroit resident's name.
"This is a hideous crime. ... There is no excuse to lose young innocent lives like this," said Police Chief Joseph E. Thomas.
The weather was sunny at the time the children were left Friday, with highs in the 80s. "It can get well over 100 degrees" inside a car, National Weather Service meteorologist Dennis Dixon said.
Police said they were called to Providence Hospital in the Detroit suburb late Friday after the woman brought in the 10-month-old girl and 3-year-old boy.
She initially told investigators she had been abducted and raped, and then returned to her car and found her children sleeping, police said.
She later changed her story, telling police that she stopped to have her hair done about 4:20 p.m., and that the children were dead when she returned more than three hours later, police said.
She said she drove for about three hours before going to the hospital, officers said.
Autopsies were scheduled to determine the official cause of death, but Detective John Harris said heat was the likely cause.

My children are 7 and 2 and I could never imagine putting my children in that kind of danger. I have trouble even letting them play outside without me being outside with them, and I live in a little town, in a trailer park and the yard is fenced.
There are no words to convey the horror at such a useless, senseless loss of such innocent children. I don't even know what to say.
I could suggest a punishment, though.
As much as I would like to support this view, it is unjustified.
How about criminal stupidity with "special circumstances"?
I still maintain that stupidity should be a jail-time crime...
No excuses.
Looking over all the responses up to yours, looks like you are the first to introduce the word "race".
Do you plan to answer your own question?
And you get one guess why.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) -- A mother whose children died after authorities say she left them in a car on a hot day for more than three hours was charged Sunday with two counts of felony murder.

Sorry... you don't get to make the rules.
The Darwin Award is posthumous by definition.
Unless you are planning to award it to the kids; but they don't qualify. They didn't get to choose their mother.
Oh.. OK.
It must be all right then.
I feel so much better.
(/sarcasm)
If she drove around for three hours, she clearly was trying to get whatever she put in her system out. She was probably at a crackhouse and was afraid to go to the station in her condition.
NOMINEE #13 The Calgary Sun Saturday, December 28, 1996 VANCOUVER (CP) - A man arguing over a love triangle accidently shot himself in the groin, taking off his testicles and part of his penis. Police said the man was waving a .357 Magnum revolver around during the shouting match early yesterday. But when he stuffed it back in his pants the gun went off. Police were called to the hospital after the man in his 20s was brought in by friends. Charges are pending against the victim, who is expected to survive
All I'm saying is that legalizing abortion did not invent infanticide.
Your question was answered far earlier in the thread.
Again, we - or at least I - am not, and have not been, claiming that a person's race somehow predisposes them to want to kill their children. My beef is with government officials who refuse to release names and media outlets that refuse to report certain names because they might make the reader/viewer think said person was black, and "it wouldn't be right for us to perpetuate racial stereotypes, now would it?"
Not that the media was covering up in this particular case, but they do very often, often in ways that are literally dangerous to the communities they are supposed to serve. For example, if a murderer is on the loose in town and they have a detailed description of the suspect and even a name, news outlets will often refuse to mention his race if he is black. You'll learn that he's 5'11" and 180 lbs and was last seen wearing a blue windbreaker and a pair of khakis, but they won't tell you he's black. This directly and severely impedes the ability of the public to watch out for said murderer. All in the name of political correctness. It is wrong, and eventually somebody's going to die because of it.
I may have been the first to mention the word race, but Timesink was clearly wondering what race the mother was, and he clarified his point to me later on in the conversation regarding the media's PC reluctance to show the race of criminals in a particular case, particularly if they are black- I believe this the case some of the time, other times not. In this case the woman's name was not printed because had not been charged, not because of her race- her name has since been released.
No I don't believe her race is relevent- evil is evil, and she should be punished to the full extent of the law for her vicious act.
Our "freedom from religion" society insists mankind exists due to nothing more than chance (dumb luck). Thus, a person has no more intrinsic value than a spotted owl, a snail darter, or algae.
Therefore, it is no surprise that conscience is lacking. Mothers of all ages and races are murdering babies left and right, in the restroom during prom, locked in the car, or in the womb. Take your pick; there's no difference. Life is abundant and extremely cheap.
Tarajee Maynor, 25, of Detroit, a mother accused of leaving her children to die inside her sweltering car while she went to have her hair done, has been charged with first-degreee murder. Maynor, shown in a Southfield, Mich., police department booking photo, remains jailed without bond Monday, July 1, 2002. Maynor faces life in prison without possibility of parole if convicted as charged. Acacia D. Maynor, 10 months, and Adonnis D. Maynor, 3 years, died Friday, June 28 after being left alone in Maynor's black compact car for more than three hours, police said. (AP Photo/Southfield Police) |
