Questions about Transporting Guns
Personal | 6/29/02

How do I carry a handgun (9mm) in a car during vacation (for a week) with out being illegal. Someone said that if you kept it locked up in a case that would be ok. Is he right?

You never know when you got to use it when in a pinch. If you know what I mean. If we have an attack on July 4th worse than 9/11, it could get crazy.

Check out the NRA web site. The have a section on the various state laws. What is legal in some areas will get you jail across the state line.

Have a happy 4th.

It depends on the State. In New Jersey you can only carry in a car, locked in a box , seperated from the ammo, while going to or from the range. You CAN NOT carry through New York AT ALL. Go to the NRA Web site NRA.org and they have a list of states and their laws.

Transportation laws vary from state to state. You can find more specifics through www.nra.org.

In some states you can carry it cassed and locked in the trunk, in some you have to transport with the ammo and gun in separate areas of the car where both are not readily accessible,i.e. the gun in the front and the ammo locked up in the trunk, and in a couple of states I even believe you can still carry it loaded and exposed in the seat beside you.

Then there are those states where they would like to arrest you even if you left it at home securely locked in your own gun safe.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

When are you leaving? What states will you travel through? There is a book called the "Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States" that might help you. The phone # is 606-647-5100 and it may also be available online. The book is about $10.00. Hopes this helps.

www.packing.org is an excellant site for state by state info.

With or without a CCW permit, you need to be careful when traveling cross country.

In some states you can leave it in sight on the seat, or open carry, other states, you better lock it in the trunk.

Stay safe.

Ty,

Transporting a gun is best done by having a conceled carry permit legal where you're traveling. Even then you have to be careful because you can't carry a gun in many palces, even with a permit. If you're very concerned, perhaps you ought not to carry it.

Motels and rest areas are dangerous, especially at night. The corporations and the state highway departments play down the danger, but there have been several studies on this. I am convinced to play it safe when using either of these.

HOW ABOUT THIS? Let's go on the attack. I propose we create a NATIONAL Conceal & Carry Law which would allow us to carry cocealed in all 50 States!

Nice idea on the surface, but yet again, you're sticking the Federal government's nose into a state matter. Granted, the Ninth and Tenth Amendments are basically toes-up anyway, but still, CCW is traditionally a matter for state governments.

What we need to do is educate the sheeple about their rights under the Second Amendment, vote out those that would disarm us, and change the laws at the state level. Easier said than done, I know, but it's how our system really ought to work.

Oh, and you bet I'm going to get educated on this too. God willing, in a couple of years my wife and I are going to be traveling the country full-time in an RV, and if you think we're going out there without self-protection you're nuts. And I don't just mean SPF 15 and bug repellant.

I agree about the Federal Beaurocracy created to enforce the Second Amendment and my comments were made tongue-in-cheek. However, educating Americans about the Second Amendment will require that teachers actually start TEACHING about the History of the United States, The Federalist Papers and all of this from a Patriotic, Conservative Point of View!

Vouchers and the elimination of the iron fist the Teachers Union has on Government Schools would be a good start!

Speaking of voting out ....... Daschle and McCain are two of the biggest embarrassments in the US Senate (I know I'm leaving Hillary and Jeffords out). Let's see if the folks of S Dakota and Arizona vote these two out first!

Um... sorry, I believe we already have one - it is called the second amendment. What we need to do is challenge all the unconstitutional gun laws.

With the 4th of July weekend approaching; the cops are stepping up "safety checkpoints", (i.e. roadblocks, "your papers, please"), all in the name of "safety". Be careful out there.

and believe me -- if the 2nd amendment were interpreted as vigorously as the establishment clause is, that's what the court would rule.
