Internet group leaves ordinary surfer high and dry

BUCHAREST, Romania (Reuters) -- The group that oversees the Internet's name system voted on Friday to exclude ordinary Web surfers from its board in a move critics say allows mainstream interests to tighten their grip on the online world.

ICANN, or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, unanimously passed the resolution at its quarterly meeting, clearing one of the most controversial issues in the development of the four-year-old organization.

One could argue that this is an important step in the direction of global control of the internet as a form of communication. Any guess as to how long it will take the internet to be regulated? Content that is viewed as dangerous could be banned. This might help stop the spread of vicious hate-speech, for instance.
