[history]
We hope those fun-loving first twins, Jenna and Barbara Bush, had a good time Wednesday night at Stetson's, the Texas-themed Washington saloon where they were spotted by multiple witnesses sucking down Budweisers and chain-smoking cigarettes with a group of friends till well past midnight.
But we suspect that as a result of this item, President Bush's 20-year-old daughters -- who've had embarrassing scrapes in the past over their under-age drinking in public places -- won't be consuming much more alcohol in the nation's capital, at least not until they reach the legal age of 21 on Nov. 25.

Does anyone recall the WP reporting on Chelsea's recent drunken escapades?
To: RoughDobermann
Does anyone recall the WP reporting on Chelsea's recent drunken escapades? I really hate to defend the WP, but Chelsea is legal. This story is about the Bush twin's being underage. It's not about alchoholism which would include Chelsea.
/Awaits flames...

You are correct but, can you imagine the WP reporting if Chelsea had been underage? No. If anything, they would be doing a big sob story on it. The kneepad media are devoted to the Clintons and hate the Bushes.
To: dts32041
I DID search thoroughly. "Bush" "Daughters" etc. Nothing.

no flames from me, but it really irks me that the best defense the freeper community can come up with is - well look at what she did...my god, if the clintons use that defense it's proof of their lack of character. consistency please.

The key word to your comments is 'story', follow that up with Wash. Post and it's still a story. Twins or not, it's easy to tell them apart. If these people were so familiar with them, they could easily say which daughter help the guy with his wrist trick. More BS

It
is a hit piece. President Bush's daughters are quite legal to be smoking cigarettes and yet that is included among the charges.
Were they fornicating, swearing like a sailor, or using God's name in vain? Gossipy minds want to know.
At least after November, these stories will be put to rest (NOT!).

I have heard a lot of people take the Bush daughters to task on FR. What gets everyone mad is, the way the press reports, with glee, about the Bush daughters, yet, take the same old hands-off approach to Chelsea.
To: weegee
If they were 14 years old and seeking an abortion, the press wouldn't have a problem with it. That is, if they weren't Bush children.
To: RoughDobermann
His article seems to focus on how President Bush's daughters weren't arrested:
Under-age drinking is a misdemeanor in D.C., and if a fake I.D. is used, the penalty can be up to a year in jail and a $300 fine. Unlike in Texas -- where authorities merely cited the Bush girls when they caught them drinking in Austin -- D.C. law requires the police to arrest an offender and take them to jail.
But is does NOT cite any possible fines or suspensions for establishments that serve minors. Things like this can put your liquor license in jeopardy.

She DID do this and nobody reported on it.

how many times was Chelsea caught drinking as an underaged individual? I believe the answer is none.
She may have taken her position as a white house occupant more seriously than her folks. she simply did not put herself in the kinds of situations the bush girls seem to be putting themselves in, and it does demonstrate a very unattractive arrogance.
The bush girls, like chelsea, are in the public eye whether they like it or not, and i'm sorry to say that Chelsea has handled it better

I'm still waiting on the media to report the Gore family habit of smoking dope (and getting suspended from school).
To: dmz
If you really think that the press would have reported on Chelsea, in the same manner as the are going after the twins, then you will believe anything. I seem to remember Al Gore's underage son getting into some of the same sort of mischief. The only time I saw it reported was on the back page of the local paper. I am not defending what the Bush twins have done (if it was indeed them). However, there is a double-standard.
To: RoughDobermann
Was it really the Bush twins? Did they even drink? It's tough to rely on a story where all of the witnesses are nameless.

The drinking age in the District of Columbia, for beer & wine only, is eighteen. While the WP may be interested in what the Bush girls were doing, nothing about it was illegal. IMHO, this reportage gives even more weight to the visible WP bias against the Bush family.
