Prominent black Democrats are among those urging Rep. J.C. Watts Jr. of Oklahoma, the lone black Republican in Congress, not to retire.

Rats. I'd like to see him stay as long as Jesse Helms. Good men are hard to find up there.

But the lobbying by influential Democrats underscores his importance as the highest-ranking black in Congress. House Democrats have no blacks among their elected leadership posts.

Yet the Democrats elected a Klansman (Byrd) to be Senator Pro Tem, 4th in line to the Presidency. The Dems sure have done a swell job, luring blacks back to the plantation: and they have them just as they always like them to be, loyal --- and marginalized.

I would like to see him stay, too. He seems quite young. Anyone know his age?

The article said 44, much too young to retire. I hope he will continue to serve: this country needs good men like him.
