Republicans say a federal appeals court ruling that the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional highlights the importance of ending Senate Democrats' blockade of President Bush's judicial nominees.

"Today's ruling makes clear the need to confirm swiftly President Bush's nominations," Republican National Chairman Marc Racicot said in a press release issued shortly after the ruling by a panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. "I hope the Senate will act quickly on confirmations and today's decision is appealed and overturned."

Beats running on real issues...Patriotism, the last vestige of a scoundrel.

This flap will provide perfect cover for the GOP who have completely failed with school choice efforts. In that sense, their efforts here will be counter productive to Conservative political goals.

School choice just won yesterday, in case you haven't come out of your cave. It was the result of Ohio Republicans fighting long and hard, like any victory, instead of the quick little high-publicity things some here want to tout as "evidence" of "conservatism."

Thank you Cleveland GOPers.

(Oh, and if you read the ed bill Bush signed, it has a clause on vouchers. Some call it a "loophole." Not anymore. Thank you Pres. Bush.)

I doubt that they can make it an issue. The Democrats have already jumped on the pro-pledge bandwagon. One of the judges voting agains the pledge was a Nixon appointee. It just won't fly. I find it hard to believe that they can't find enough real issues to hit the Democrats with. Aren't they looking?

There are plenty of issues to hit the Dems with. Unfortunately, none have the emotional appeal that your average American has been lulled into reacting to.
Conservatives argue based on facts and logic (boring), and libs argue with the highest emotional impact possible.

With this issue, the GOPers have an emotionally charged issue that can be tied directly to the frustration we're having in the Senate. I say run with it.

As far as sticking this on the Dems - everyone knows who supports removing God from every part of public life, and it ain't the Republicans.

As far as sticking this on the Dems politicians - everyoneRepublicans knows who supports removing God from every part of public life, and it ain't the Republicans.
The ability of God-fearing rank-and-file Dems to not see something as obvious as that is a source of continuing wonderment.

So yes, the Dems have reason to run to the microphones and cover their backsides. And, it will be remarkably effective on most independent and nearly all rank-and-file-Democrat sheeple. And many of these are (on most any other topic) intellegent people.

Heck, I walked around for forty years assuming that journalists were basically objective. You tell me how . . . other than my conservative unwillingness to assume a conspiracy. Finally, I was able to synthesize

a model of limited journalistic competition

which seems to fit conservative principle to the facts on the ground . . .
