Make-A-Wish Foundation Burglarized
Dina Kaplan Reports on Make-A-Wish Burglary (LOUISVILLE, June 26th, 2002, 5:55 p.m.) -- A Kentucky charity that helps make dreams come true for sick children is forced to postpone a major fundraising auction after a burglary. Someone broke into the Make-A-Wish Foundation's main office Tuesday night, and stole hundreds of gifts that were meant for auction. WAVE 3's Dina Kaplan has the story.
All the thief left behind were a package of barbecue sauce, a basket from McDonald's, and the authenticity note for two signed baseballs -- but the baseballs themselves were stolen. Now a room at the Kentucky headquarters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation that was once full of nearly 100 gifts is virtually empty.
"It is just so selfish," said Loree Holland with Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Police told the company a robber entered through a window, stole gifts in the room, and then exited through another window. Police say some homes in the area were robbed Tuesday night as well.
Amazingly enough, there is an alarm that's supposed to detect motion, but the thief moved strategically enough that the alarm bells never rang. "There were just two alarms there," said David Hatton with Mid-America Security. Now Mid-America Security is doubling the number of alarms in the office, hoping to protect future dreams.
Make-A-Wish fulfills fantasies for terminally ill kids. Christopher photographed for National Geographic; Anthony met The Rock; Kelly vacationed in Hawaii. But now many dreams will have to be deferred.
A fundraising auction originally scheduled for July 13th has now been postponed until September. The auction was expected to raise $50,000, which would have been enough to fund dreams for dozens of young people who often only dream of living.
If you would like to donate anything to the auction, now scheduled for September 14th, you can call Make-A-Wish at 502-253-6490.
