Digital Driver's Licenses on the Way in Rhode Island
Jun 25, 06:35

The Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles has signed a three-point-two million dollar contract for a new digital driver's license system.

In addition to taking photos digitally, and capturing signatures with an electronic tablet, the system will spit out driver's licenses with two-dimensional bar codes on the back.

The little black strips, when swiped, will reveal a name, age, address and a black-and-white picture. The information that should match exactly what's listed on the front of the card.

Massachusetts-based Viisage Technology Incorporated is building the new system for the state. It expects to start issuing new licenses to residents by the end of the year.

The IDs will cost the state about one dollar more to make, but the registry doesn't expect to pass the expense on to residents. Eight locations across the state will be outfitted with the digital technology

Of course, when the "bad" guys just run a magnet across the back of the ID, rendering the technology an utterly useless piece of plastic, I guess it'll be $3.2 million well spent.

"Charge the taxpayers? Nosiree.", said one DMV worker who asked to remain anonymous. "Instead of charging the taxpayer for this, we're just using our new color laser printers to make all the money we'll ever need."

I live in Maine--at least we're not Rhode Island.

Hmmmm.... This is really no different than what we have in Texas. I believe that California and a few other states also already have the same thing. I got my Texas Drivers licence 18 months ago and they used a digital camera, digital capture of my signature (and thumbprint), and it has a magnetic strip and a bar code on the back. Also, when you swipe it, you get all the information and a black and white picture that is supposed to be on the card.

Well, welcome to the 21st century. Rhode Island is not unique in this. It's already started elsewhere.

Indeed - what caught my eye is how they say costs will not be passed on.

That's what they all say. They'll find a way to pass it on. Otherwise, they would have been charging to much in taxes and DL Fees.
