Vanity -Freeper Needs Help on Police Using Excessive Force
self

I have never published a vanity before and hope freepers won't mind helping me out.

I have an extremely close friend in another state who last month was manhandled by some police for a traffic violation in a not-so-large town. They actually broke her hand. She feels her rights were violated (the traffic ticket was actually dismissed) and she went to an attorney. The attorney told her she can count on not only losing the case but being tormented by the police the rest of her time in that town (and her children, who are just starting driving) if she persues this.

Friends, she was truly hurt and tramatized. She is afraid to drive any more and won't let anyone from her family go out alone in a car. I know this woman well, she has all her marbles and if she says she was abused she was. She is educated and a good Christian person. She is a person of integrity and has a spotless life.

She is actually making preparations to sell her home, because she will not stay in a town where this kind of abuse is allowed. The problem is, even the doctors are afraid to treat her or refer her. The lawyer is certainly afraid to handle her (and has communicated this to her). I want to give her good advice as to what to do, we were thinking of the ACLU (make then earn some HONEST money!) but she is dead set against such a godless organization. She is not interested in money, or even getting her medical bills paid, she wants to put the fear of God into them to keep them from doing such things again. She is just 100 lbs, she was ground into the wall by two huge cops. She feels they broke her hand on purpose to teach her a lesson.

I honestly do not know the viability of her case, but I do know that she is not getting good advice because her attorney is afraid. She is a totally principled person and does not feel she can let this go. She also has the guts to pursue an action, (actually, it is upsetting her very much that she might have to let them get by with this). I told her, the freepers are the best people I know for good advice for this. Any suggestions out there?

In some states, it would make sense to contact the State Police, who usually have jurisdiction over police misconduct. Also, whatever equivalent to the Department of Justice the state has. Her attorney should earn his/her retainer and get her in touch with the proper agency at the state capital.

Also, police misconduct that borders on regular corruption should be reported to the nearest local field office of the FBI.

The she has suffered a broken hand, which is documented by X-rays and medical testimony provides forensic evidence to back her case.

The ACLU isn't the only option, but consider that on a few issues the ACLU isn't "the enemy"... there are a few here and there within it that would support her cause. In a sense, "the enemy of my other enemy is my friend". If the ACLU willingly defends on this case against police corruption and brutality, then they're serving to promote a libertarian republican cause, and defending what is "right".

I can tell you a similar story of a friend of mine in a small town in New Hampshire.

She stuck around and tried to fight it out because she knew she was right.

That was five years ago.

Small town "justice" is nothing you want to tangle with unless you are independently wealthy. Frivolous arrests are expensive to fight and YOU look bad in the end.

Ask her today if she has any regrets she'll tell you she should have moved five years ago.

There has to be a large city in the same State with a Lawyer who wouldn't be intimidated and could give her a free legal consultation. Most Lawyers offer a free or limited fee intial consultation and then charge for any representation agreed upon.

Or the details, apparently.

I know more than I care to post in an open forum. It is a long story, and I would not be posting this if I thought she was in the wrong.

What town and state?

Must have been Beijing, China.

This is a free after all and things like that don't happen here. /sarcasm

Well, details about how it happened would help... what kind of stop was it, what was said... How did she end up out of the car, How actually was her hand broken, was she arrested? Without that kind of narrative, it is tough to picture what happened.
