President Bush has signed a bill allowing death benefits to be paid to the domestic partners of firefighters and police officers who die in the line of duty, permanently extending a federal death benefit to same-sex couples for the first time.

The new law allows a $250,000 federal benefit for survivors of public safety officers to be paid to any beneficiary listed on the victim's life insurance policy. The money has been available only to spouses, children and parents.

Paul Weyrich of the Free Congress Foundation said it sets a potentially expensive precedent. "Putting the stamp of approval on a deviant lifestyle should not be the mark of a conservative administration"

Why not long term hetero partners or those engaged to be married then?

The new law allows a $250,000 federal benefit for survivors of public safety officers to be paid to any beneficiary listed on the victim's life insurance policy. The money has been available only to spouses, children and parents.

This would also allow the beneficiary to be another relative (like an aunt or uncle) or anyone else the person designates. This is not unlike private insurance policies.

But, this is a gay-bashing thread, so carry on.

Good grief!! Why is there a federal, repeat federal, death benefit for the survivors of public safety officers? DOes this mean that my local police officer's wife (and now homo lover), if he gets killed, gets $250K from the Feds?

Not only is extending the benefit not conservative, but the mere existence of it is an abomination!

Bush isn't a conservative. He is a "compassionate" conservative, i.e. liberal.

According to the article, these could also be beneficiaries.

This is not unlike private insurance policies.

EXCEPT it is NOT insurance. It is TAX money taken out of the general fund. Please show me in the Constitution where the government is allowed to take money frome one person and give it to another.

So you don't have a problem with the cash going to a gay partner and the subsequent precedent this is setting? Right?

Everyone has thought, "if we only get a Republican President in office this nation will be turned around." We will not change as a nation until we as a nation confess and repent of our sins and turn back to God.

AMERICA TODAY (READ THE BIBLE)

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.
26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Benefits can be paid to a neice, nephew, cousin, uncle, half-brother, mother, father, or business partner.

I don't see how this is a gay rights law. Why shouldn't a single firefighter be able to list his parents as beneficiaries.

My brother in law just died at 46 years of age. His parents VERY MUCH wish right now that he had life insurace with them listed as beneficiaries. But he did not. What would be wrong with it?

..gay-bashing thread

We're just recognizing that these people are involved in perverted, sick and twisted sexual acts. Is that gay-bashing?

the bill was "likely to create unintended and unfortunate results."

Maybe a lawsuit, maybe a case going to the Supreme Court. Hey, I feel badly for all of the people who lost loved ones during September 11th, but, just because someone was on someones life insurance policy doesn't mean they were "domestic partners" anyway.

I'm the beneficiary on my aunts insurance policy but I'm obviously not her "domestic partner".

Also, I guess this will also cover heterosexual couples who were living together. As 'good intentioned' as Bush may be by doing this it seems he just opened a pandoras box. jmo.

Great. Now every "single" firefighter will all of a sudden have a "domestic partner" show up at his funeral to collect even if no one in the firefighter's family ever heard of him. How can the family prove that the deceased was not gay?

The answer is in the article: "saying in a letter to Congress that the benefit had been designed for immediate survivors with pressing needs".

Bush is compasionate conservative ie= Liberal. You hit the nail on the head. Bush has pushed liberal legislation that Sick Willie only dreamed of passing. I would just as soon vote for Sick Willie as vote for Bush again.
