SRINAGAR, June 24: Law Minister Mushtaq Ahmad Lone’s house was attacked by militants, injuring five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel at Sogam in north Kashmir today.

Official sources said militants threw a hand grenade at the ancestral house of Mr Lone at Sogam in the frontier district of Kupwara. The grenade exploded near the CRPF personnel guarding the house causing injuries to five personnel.

The injured were admitted to hospital. However, two of the seriously injured were shifted to Srinagar.

Sources said the area was immediately cordoned off and a massive hunt has been launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack.

Meanwhile a civilian, Mohammad Yousuf Malik succumbed to splinter injuries he had received in a grenade attack by militants at Sangloo bridge in Shopian area of Pulwama district yesterday, the spokesman said.

Malik was among eight persons injured in the explosion aimed at a police party. Among the injured two were police personnel, the spokesman said.

He said security forces apprehended a militant from Chak Dangerpora in Badgam district of central Kashmir yesterday.

Three rifle grenades, a wireless set and some Nepalese currency were recovered from him. (AGENCIES)

Al-Madina front line group of AUM: Police

SRINAGAR, June 24: Militant outfit Al-Madina regiment, which claimed responsibility for yesterday’s attack on the venue where Omar Abdullah took over as president of ruling National Conference, is a frontline group of Al-Umar Mujahideen, a senior police official said today.

"Al-Madina regiment is a frontline organisation of Al-Umar Mujahideen. They are just trying to create panic among the public," IGP K Rajindra Kumar said.

Two grenades were lobbed at the Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium yesterday where the Minister of State for External Affairs took over reins of the party from his father, Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.

The grenades fell into a drain before exploding and caused no injuries.

On June 15, two rifle grenades were fired at a Government building at Bedina when the senior Abdullah was inaugurating it, but they also fell into a pool. Al-Madina regiment had claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Al-Umar Majahidden is headed by Mushtaq Ahmad Zargar alias Latram, who was released in December 1999 in return for passengers of a Indian Airlines plane hijacked from Kathmandu.

Kumar dismissed suggestions that the attacks constituted a security lapse on the part of police.

"We cannot be everywhere. We have the responsibility of safeguarding the venue, which we did successfully," Kumar said.

The hitherto unknown outfit said the actions were the beginning of their anti-election campaign.

(Yesterday’s) "attack was the beginning of our campaign to disrupt the forthcoming Assembly elections," a caller, who claimed to an Al-Madina spokesman, said.

The pro-Pak militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen also claimed responsibility for yesterday’s attack. (PTI)
