If this is true, my seven sisters and two brothers should be in prison or a mental institution ...

Ms. Gershoff needs to be turned over someone's knee.

I was spanked and believe me, I knew who the authorities in my life were -- Mom and Dad. Not, the school psychologist who trolled around for student subjects. The APA is part of the meta-left that sees the family as an obstacle to their order. Do they even guess that we're on to them?

The psychologist, Elizabeth Gershoff, found links between spanking and 10 negative behaviors or experiences, including aggression, anti-social behavior and mental health problems. The one positive result of spanking that she identified was quick compliance with parental demands.

Ms. Gershoff is a twit of the highest order and should have her license, if she has one yanked. She probably would benefit from a good spanking as well.

I never spanked for instant behavior compliance. I used it as do many social mammals to establish dominance over the pack: to identify to the children who was the alpha male. This fostered more harmony rather than less. Humans are physical, not merely mental beings, a fact that may have escaped the clueless Gershoff.

What about the thousands of decades where children turned out far superior in behavior? I keep questioning why I never went for my doctorate when the answer is before my eyes. (Education beyond your intelligence.)

How to spank:
1. Define in advance unacceptble behavior(Ok you can't think of everything).
2. When the line is crossed tell the perp what he has done, and that you will see him in his room in a few hours to administer the punishment. The waiting is the worst part. Second benefit, is you probably have calmed down since he put that dent in your car.
3. At the appointed time enter the perp's room, and give a long long lecture about why he shouldn't do that.
4. then say the magic words "this hurts me more than you" (kids hate that) Then spank with a belt or some pliable thing, not your hand(can injure).
5. Remember, it's not the pain, but the humiliation and stewing that gets em.
The average kid gets 5 spankings in 12 years. Anything to avoid Dad's/Mom's lectures.

Not every culture spanks children.

Africans never spank their kids (Ruanda anyone?)

Japanese kids are never spanked (Does the Rape on Nanking ring a bell?)

And, of course, traditional American Indians do not spank their children.

That said, there is a difference between spanking and overuse of physical punishment. Some of the worst criminals have been beaten by abusive sadistic parents. This is not the same as spanking.

Perhaps she should read the studies on the effects of psychiatry on mental health.

Pedagogy is more difficult than spanking. One must develop the conscience on the basis of love, not fear. Punishment that is connected to anger is dangerous, and spanking, if ever, must be absolute last resort. Already at a very early age a child that is raised well needs no more spanking.

"Until researchers, clinicians, and parents can definitively demonstrate the presence of positive effects of corporal punishment, including effectiveness in halting future misbehavior, not just the absence of negative effects, we as psychologists can not responsibly recommend its use," Gershoff wrote.

I quess this goes for my tazer as well.

You are a very wise person. Most people do not know the difference between a swat on the rear end and a beating. Both are called "spanking". My children's psychiatric unit where I worked was filled with children who were "spanked". My childhood was filled with this BS. The worst, most laughable, most hypocritical thing was hearing "I'm doing this because I love you" then getting the hell beaten out of me. This is something I will always struggle with in my life and most likely never get over the damage that was done. You don't hurt people you love. I usually stay away from these threads because they make me cringe. Thanks for posting.

Oh, I agree. But then I became a mother and found that my boys wanted their own way and kept pushing until they got what they wanted. So a small smack got their attention that there were limits. If your kids were angels then pedagogy will work. But go read "Lord of the Flies" as an allegory on childhood without restraint.

Whenever I hear "experts" preach on how to raise kids, I quote the Chinese proverb: "Expert on children/ childless woman".

Every kid is different, and I'm not sure that non spanking means of imposing restraint is any better. American Indians ridicule boys. Africans ridicule and exclude them from the group. Is this less cruel than a quick smack?

Expert on child abuse/person who's been abused and overcomes it.

From my bit of experience I have discovered there is no time or means to spank when pedagogy is engaged. When boys are devils and no longer angels, I am inclined to believe that the pedagogical ball has been dropped. And it does get dropped, too often, because parents hands are busy with other things.

We chose what to do. And when I am playing cello with my daughter playing violin, I have no free hands to spank. Attention of the mind is more difficult, and it may be that such attention needs to be spaced more. Discipline is a touchy subject, because we are free to set the rules ourselves. Because I know the inefficiency of spanking devils, I have turned to outwitting them.

That is not to say that some find corporal punishment effective. But that would be my last point. It is effective, but it hardly teaching anything. Teaching children to become mature adults is an art of the highest order. No artists manual, painting, sculpture, poetry, music, recommends spanking as a means to that end.
