BOSTON -- Republican Mitt Romney is eligible to run for governor, a state board ruled Tuesday, unanimously rejecting Democrats' claim that the time Romney spent in Utah overseeing the Salt Lake Olympics disqualified him as a Massachusetts resident.

It is believed to be the first time a Massachusetts candidate for governor has been challenged on the residency requirement. Romney is the only Republican in the race, along with five Democrats.

A longtime Cambridge resident, Reich said he returned to official Massachusetts residency on Aug. 1, 1995, narrowly satisfying the seven-year residency requirement.

Ah ha, Reich has been planning for his loss in the 2002 Governor's race for 7 years. Talk about a waste of time.

There is a victory rally at Mitt's HQ in Cambridge tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11:30AM. Right across the street from the Alewife T station.

No kidding. I'm surprised at the Dems, actually---this is the best they can do? Shannon O'Brien's panties must be in a bunch this afternoon.

Poor Reich. Did you see that photo yesterday (Globe) of him campaigning? The crowd was about 10 strong, all campaign workers.

Birmingham? Bulgerstained.

I'd have more respect for them if they just took out an ad on WRKO that said "listen, we know we're beat . . . we're just grasping at straws." Now if Howie Carr would just put aside his class envy for once . . .

Actually, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a history of Republican Governors. His Excellency (official title) John Volpe was Governor when I was a kid. Then he lost his seat when it was revealed that somehow his brother got a bunch of construction contracts for the new expressways that were being built then.

And then, a few years later, when all those expressways started to fall apart EXCEPT FOR THE ONES VOLPE'S BROTHER BUILT, he got re-elected. One of the few elected officials anywhere in the country to serve split terms in the same office. The voters figured that helping your family is O.K. if the job gets done on spec.

We've had a string of GOP governors since the Duke era: Weld, Celluci, and now Swift.

Romney lived in the Boston suburb of Belmont from 1971 to 1999, then moved to Utah to oversee the Salt Lake Olympic Games. He returned to Massachusetts in March. While living in Utah, he maintained his Belmont home and was registered to vote in Massachusetts.

Big difference here according to the Rats. The Rats can live and vote in more then one state

Before women's suffrage was forced on us the Northeast was the most conservative part of the country. The men still generally are pretty conservative but the women...

They called as a witness a Utah newspaper reporter who in a sworn affidavit said Romney told her in April 2000 that he considered his Park City, Utah home his primary residence for tax purposes.

I thought reporters had this principled thing about not testifying in court about their stories and sources. I guess it only applies when someone like Clinton is in hot water.
