Several wounded in western German shooting

DORTMUND, Germany (Reuters) - Several people were wounded during a shooting in the center of the German city of Dortmund Monday, police said.

Officials could not immediately provide details of the incident in western Germany.

Germany's upper house ratified a proposal last Friday to raise the age limit for gun ownership and ban pump-action shotguns.

German politicians have acted to beef up control on guns after a former student in Erfurt shot and killed 16 people, mostly teachers, before committing suicide in April in Germany's worst post-war shooting massacre.

The euro-weenies have it backwards again. Instead of putting more controls on gun ownership it sounds like they need to loosen them up. Let the german people defend themselves.

Several people were wounded during a shooting in the center of the German city of Dortmund Monday, police said.

And there were none who could return fire.

Update. According to haaretz.com: 2 dead from drive-by shooting. Sounds more like LA than Dortmund.

Two Killed in Shooting in Germany

BERLIN, Jun 24, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Two people were killed and two others seriously injured in a downtown shooting in the west German city of Dortmund on Monday, police said.

According to n-tv television, the shooting was carried out by more than one person, who came out of a bar and opened fire on people outside a computer store. Television showed the area was sealed off and shooting had stopped.

Dortmund police would not immediately confirm the report or say whether any arrests had been made.

Party freaks vs. computer geeks?

If this is a new, global trend, it's going to be hard to draw the lines here at FR...

My son is on the second week of a six week tour of Europe with a friend after graduating from college and wouldn't you know that tomorrow they are going to Berlin (in Amsterdam now).

I know, I know, but you'd be a little worried too right?

"People don't get shot in the United States?"

People in the United States don't claim that ever-stricter gun-control will prevent all shootings.
Intelligent people, that is.

People in the United States believe that the ultimate responsibility for your defense lies in your own hands.
Unlike Germany, where the State is expected to provide everything.

Wait a minute...this story is bogus...has to be - Germany has extra-ordinarily tight "gun control" laws.

These laws keep citizens safe - so this story has to be a lie.

>My son is on the second week of a six week tour of Europe with a friend...

If it makes you feel safer (I know it won't), my brother and his wife just got back from an extended visit to Europe. They took guided tours, and also went off by themselves a lot (they're both old hippies). They loved Europe and, especially, they loved how safe they felt. They said that every country they visited had the same feeling you get when you're in a safe neighborhood in America.

My brother said when they first got there, they'd ask people and local police if there were any areas they should stay away from, any places not to go after dark, but after getting little more than smiles and laughter, they eventually stopped even doing that...

I imagine your son is a good deal safer anywhere over there, than most (urban) places over here...

Guns, alcohol, and computers - you can have it all if you mix them in the proper order.

Right: install Linux, shoot a liberal, drink 10 beers in celebration.

Wrong: drink 2 cases of beer, install NT, and shoot yourself in the foot. But then, I repeat myself.

Banning guns isn't very significant when you have the weak penalties they have. Start hanging people for violating these gun laws, and maybe you've got something.

Like for instance, shooters who'll fight to the death, taking as many as possible with them, knowing they have nothing to lose, since surrender means an eventual hanging?

In a country where the residual leftovers of the half million AK47 and AKM automatic rifles of the former East German National People's Army can still be found? Swell.

That's not what my England-born girl friend sisters say about England where they still live. They see crime rising.

Isn't it curious that in almost any western country, whenever gun confiscation is being discussed, an incident like this happens. Imagine that.
