NO SIGN YET OF JEWISH PATROLS

June 24, 2002 -- Right-wing rabbi Yakove Lloyd yesterday said he was going ahead with plans to have armed squads patrol Borough Park and Flatbush in Brooklyn to protect their Jewish residents from terrorist attacks.

But there was no sign of the patrols early this morning, when they were expected to begin.

Lloyd, founder of the Jewish Defense Group, postponed plans for the unauthorized security details two weeks ago in the face of police warnings.

But he said last night he was prepared to have his 50 volunteer vigilantes arrested - and had raised the necessary bail money

Reporters can't seem to resist using the "vigilante" word. Rabbi Lloyd is raising awareness and acceptability of taking responsible action to protect ones own community IMHO.

Though there has been much made of the Rabbi's call for patrols armed with shotguns and rifles, there was also some mention of individuals holding NYC carry permits.

It would take one hell of a reporter to spot a pair of "patrolling sentinels" who were carrying concealed pistols
