After church services this morning, President Bush hosted another tee ball game on the south lawn of the White House. The President also marked the 30th anniversary of Title IX, the law that that requires schools receiving federal money to provide equal opportunities for men and women. Bush will be attending the G-8 summit later this week in Canada. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!

QUOTE OF THE DAY: It's fitting that we end by playing Little League ball. I want parents to encourage their children to exercise -- and while the children are exercising, you might want to exercise yourself.

PING!
RWP Note: Title IX has helped, but there is still a lot of inequality in women's sports at the high school level. As a former coach, I have first hand experience.

I don't think women's sports should be shortchanged, but on campuses where there are not enough women who are INTERESTED in playing a particular sport or sports in general, I don't think the men should be penalized by having one of their sports programs cancelled in the name of equality. This has happened in the past, and I just think it's wrong.

Oh I agree.
Here's my experience. I coached girls softball a few years ago- at my alma matter of all places! During practice, I noticed that the boys baseball field had a brand new break-away fence. They had NEVER used a fence before. Not even when I went to school there. Now if you saw the softball field, basically anyone who hit it past an outfielder would get a homerun because there was nothing to stop the ball- not even decent grass. So, I went to the AD and asked 'what gives?' And he said they didn't have any more money for the girls softball field. And to top it off, the boys got new uniforms two weeks later, while the girls were playing in the SAME uniforms I played in.
Well, after out first game, my girls asked me, 'Coach- how come we don't have a fence like the boys do. Aren't we supposed to?' And I told them to go ask the AD, and to have their parents ask.
Did we ever get a fence? No. But the lesson my girls learned is to fight for what is right, no matter what the outcome. Oh, and to also NEVER let a ball get past you in the outfield.

She looks just thrilled to be there sitting behind the president! You are very observant. I didn't notice this the first time I saw the picture. My excuse? I didn't get past looking at Dubya. LOL!
