WOONSOCKET, R.I. -- Vandals spray-painted three black swastikas on a temple in Woonsocket, R.I.

Police are investigating it as a hate crime.

Members of the Congregation B'nai Israel synagogue discovered the symbols Saturday when they arrived for service.

One swastika was painted on the front door and another was on glass covering a sign facing the street. The third was on the building's side.

Rabbi Sylvan Kamens told The Providence Journal that he has never encountered this type of vandalism before. But he said it seems there has been an increase in this type of activity nationwide in recent months.

When I was a teenager, I had a friend who would paint swatstikas on Jewish businesses, on gravestones, in alleyways, etc. This guy was completely clueless about what the swatstika meant, other than being vaguely aware that it was associated with Adolph Hitler.

So why did he do it? Because he knew that it would get the local police & media into an uproar.

My guess is, this vandalism was perpetrated by some clueless teens.

I read in today's paper that Hitler's Mein Kampf (sp) is now the number 1 best selling book in Arab countries, and in the Arab portion of London. The above action is no surprise.

Glad I read all the replies BEFORE posting for a change...I was going to suggest Arafat's ideological relationship to Hitler. "Palestinian sympathizer" is what jumped into my head when I first read the article.

I'm not sure about that. I was curious about all the "Mein Kampf" is the most popular book in Arabic countries stories I was reading so I found a good online translator and went to Arabic bookstores online, searching for Hitler in Arabic.

I only found a couple of books about Hitler but did not find anything by Hitler, like Mein Kampf. It sounds like a bit of a myth to me.
