Mother Sacrifices Life To Save Son Ohio Woman Killed By Minivan Posted: 10:47 a.m. EDT June 23, 2002
HAMILTON, Ohio -- A Hamilton woman was killed when she was hit by a minivan after pushing her 6-year-old son out of the path of the vehicle.
Thirty-nine-year-old Susan Maus and her son were standing in the driveway of a friend's home on Thursday while Maus's van idled at the top of the steep driveway. Maus pushed her son aside when she saw the van starting to roll toward them.
Police said the front end of the van knocked Maus down and pushed her into a section of brick wall at the garage's edge.
Her son suffered minor injuries. Police said Maus died of fatal head injuries at the scene.
Police did not immediately release information about what caused the van to lunge forward. They said they planned to test the vehicle for a possible mechanical problems.
Maus was the mother of four children ranging in age from 6 to 15.
