NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ Consumer advocate and political activist Ralph Nader is scheduled to appear at the Coliseum in New Haven next week.

``The purpose of these events this year is to bring people together in cities across America, which is especially critical now,'' said Nader, the 2000 Green Party presidential candidate.

New Haven is the 11th stop in Nader's ``People Have the Power Tour,'' sponsored by the nonprofit grass roots group, Democracy Rising, Nader's newest political organization.

The group focuses on issues such as living wage legislation and ending corporate welfare.

The New Haven event, set for 5 p.m. June 30, also will include singer Patti Smith, actress and comedian Janeane Garofalo and comedian D.L. Hughley.

In addition, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Curry, Green Party member and Hartford City Councilwoman Elizabeth Horton Sheff will appear at the event that also will feature about 100 community organizations in an ``activism trade show.''

During the 2000 presidential election, an article in Environmental News Service says of Green Party candidate Nader: 'The other two parties are overwhelmed with arrogance and complacency,' said Nader. Nader has spent relatively little time on the campaign trail criticizing Bush, dismissing the Texas governor as nothing more than a 'corporation disguised as a person running for President. America’s political system makes Gore and Bush virtually indistinguishable,' Nader said. 'They are the same corporate party with two heads wearing different makeup.' "
