Remand of Israeli suspected of killing Palestinian in riot extended

Rishon Letzion Magistrate's Court on Saturday extended to Wednesday the remand of Yosef Cohen, The 27-year-old Israeli who was arrested Friday on suspicion of shooting dead a 32-year old Palestinian in a village near Nablus on Friday. Cohen told the court he was innocent.

"I did not do it, I did not kill him," said. Cohen, a resident of the West Bank community of Yitzhar, and other settlers, allegedly came into the village of Arak Burin, near Nablus, following the funerals of the victims of the Itamar terrorist attack on Friday.

There they allegedly continued to riot, vandalize Palestinian property and set fire to a number of buildings and two cars. A Palestinian man was shot during the riot.

Police had found an M-16 weapon in the suspect's car, but according to his attorney, Shai Wolfstein, it was not his. "He did not use the weapon, and does not have a permit for it," he told reporters.

After having attended the funeral in Itamar, Wolfstein said, he had wanted to return to his home in Yitzhar. When stopped and questioned concerning the murder by IDF soldiers, Wolfstein said, he answered them in jest: "yes, I killed him, I shot him in the head."

Police said weapons and shells were found on the scene. They were sent to be examined, they added. Palestinian Police denied the request of Israel Police, to hand over the Palestinian man's body for examination.

Wolfstein said that in his opinion, the suspect would not even be tried, "since we don't even have the body of the slain Palestinian."

Ah, Judaism the religion of peace and harmony. Within the next 48 hours we will see stories being printed stating that the Palestinian fellow actually shot himself.

Yet another confused comment by you on the Middle East situation.

Did you actually read the article, or did your bias get in the way of that? It is being treated as a crime. A suspect has been arrested. Investigations continue. That's the way that it's done in civilized countries that have courts and laws. And you don't see Israelis or Jews celebrating in the streets and passing out sweets and presents because a Palestinian was shot. And you don't see gleeful claims of responsibility and warnings of more to come, cheered on by the masses, either.

But that's not the reaction in the Palestinian areas or other Arab areas when Palestinians commit murder, is it? You have a hard time distinguishing between civilization and barbarianism, don't you. But I guess that you have a peculiar aversion to facing inconvenient truths when they conflict with your biases, don't you...

...jee wheez I am so bent out of shape because of this...NOT. Too bad they did not wipe out all of those cockroaches, so we can get back to normal life again! 23 posted on 6/22/02 10:05 PM Pacific by Otto von Bismark

This is a comment posted by one of your fellow travelers here of FR in response to the IDF killing a couple of six year old kids, a pregnant woman and an old man (Palestinians of course). But your right, I am sure I won't see any Israelis or Jews celebrating the killing of Palestinians. After all Judaism is the religion of peace and tolerance...just ask the folks who still make a shrine of Dr. Baruch Goldstein's grave. You, being such a student of Mid East history, probably have no idea who he was or what he did.

Yes we do. All over this forum and others. Which is why I say it's a tribal war and Israel is hardly civilized

Then, by that standard (what you see "over this forum and others"), America's wars are all tribal wars, and America is hardly civilized...
