Advice columnist Ann Landers dead at 83

CHICAGO (AP) -- Ann Landers, the columnist whose snappy, plainspoken and timely advice helped millions of readers deal with everything from birth to death, died Saturday. She was 83.

The death of Landers, whose real name was Esther Lederer, was announced by the Chicago Tribune, publisher of her column. She died less than two weeks before her July 4 birthday.

I believe Abby is still living. The recent columns have been produced in conjuction with her daughter -- so i suppose the column will go on.

I had no idea that she was that old! She looked pretty darn good for a lady of her age, God willing I'll be as lucky.

Like you, I found the column extremely annoying. It was obvious that most of the letters were made up. For example, nearly every letter had the second paragraph begin with "Abby" as in "Abby, blah, blah, blah..." People just don't write that way.

As well, almost every piece of advice ended with the dreaded "seek psychiatric counseling." Did she get a commission from head shrinks or something?

What a poor, rude choice of words. I imagine that the rest of America is about like me. When I read her column, I was certainly capable of recognizing poor advice or some of her more liberal-based answers.

Yes, she was viciously anti-gun, and that was enough for me to decide she was a quack.
