any cause of death? The article says that the game scheduled hasn't started and the players aren't on the field.

OMG - what happened? Is this why the game is postponed?

I'll be checking here and ESPN for more info, thanks for the heads-up.

Terrible news...

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch site:

KMOX reports Darryl Kile is dead

By the Post-Dispatch Online Sports Staff
06/22/2002 01:54 PM

Darryl Kile, in the final regular-season game of 2001.

The station did not have details of the death when it aired the report by sportscaster Tom Ackerman at approximately 2 p.m.

The Cardinals-Chicago Cubs game, scheduled to begin at 2:20 p.m., has been canceled.

Cubs catcher and player representative Joe Girardi made the announcement to the sold-out crowd at Wrigley Field, saying that there had been a "tragedy in the Cardinals family" and asking the fans to "say a prayer for the St. Louis Cardinals and their family."

The Cardinals are expected to make an announcement soon.

For a Kile family member I am sure it is even worse.

This absolutely blows.

An on-field announcement (which aired live, nationwide on Fox) was made at Wrigley Field a few minutes ago. The few details that we have had on the Fox game, came from Joe Buck in the booth in Chicago.

I'm sure ESPNNEWS will carry the presser live.

This is an awful thing for St Louis. Shadow, what's going on with this and the Jack Buck thing?

I've always liked the Cards. If Cincy couldn't win it, the Cards were always my next choice. (Wrigs, the cubbies woulda been on my list to win, too, but they've got a century old jinx on them that just won't quit....y'all need to hold a prayer meeting on the pitcher's mound and cleanse that place.)

As much as I don't like the Cardinals, this absolutly sucks. I can't imagine what is going on with the team right now. A very sad day.

If the death was not homicide or suicide, this is an example of what they call synchronicity. When two seemingly rare events happen with some strong connection, for no apparent reason. Such events are noteworthy strictly because they are so unusual.

I have several examples in my own life. For example, my grandfather, a monster in human form, died within three days of the close of purchase on my first house. My sister was married four days after my divorce was final. And my Australian girlfriend arrived in the US the very day my ex-wife remarried (today). I've also had a whole heap of important things happen on the 4th of different months. My mom died Jan 4, my aunt Steffi died Feb 4, my first girlfriend broke up with me May 4, I attempted suicide June 4, my wedding date was October 4 (which happened to be the 51st wedding anniversary of the justice of the peace -- another example of synchronicity), and my first engagement was November 4. I wonder what will happen July 4, when I'll be in Boston with my girlfriend...

Sorry for the analytical stuff. I've had so much death in my family that I don't quite know how to act any more. I've seen Kile pitch, but didn't know him, and still I felt a lump in my chest when hearing of his death. Maybe it's because baseball is such an American sport, and he was so young.

LaRussa was just on Fox Sports - he says Kile died in his sleep. More info due from the upcoming presser. ESPNEWS says we are about five-to-ten minutes out right now.

USA: Baseball-Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile found dead - reports.

16:08 ET
Reuters English News Service
(C) Reuters Limited 2002.

CHICAGO, June 22 (Reuters) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile, 33, was found dead in his Chicago hotel room on Saturday, according to radio reports.

A spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed that her office was investigating.

The Chicago Cubs were scheduled to play the Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Chicago's Wrigley Field, but the baseball game was canceled following reports that the veteran pitcher had been found dead.

"We got a call that he had expired. Our doctor won't examine the body until tomorrow. We can't confirm anything. We haven't investigated the scene," the spokeswoman at the medical examiner's office said.

She said her office was called to the Westin Hotel at 909 N. Michigan Avenue in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood on Saturday afternoon.

No further details were immediately available about the cause of death.

...DARRYL KILE was a fine, regular guy while playing at Chaffey College in California. He now joins his Mentor Baseball Coach HOWARD LOWDER in Baseball Paradise. Both loved the Game so deeply.

My prayers and sympathies are extended to Darryl Kile's family and anyone else whose lost a loved one today. There are probably people suffering from shock as well, but won't have the publicity that this man had. May God comfort all those in this darkest hour of grief!
