Bad economic conditions discourage people from increasing their families. Excessive alcohol consumption also is a factor. Russian society is a mess.

Were it not for our liberal immigration policy, the United States would be experiencing population declines as well. Whether that would be a good or a bad thing makes for interesting discussion.

Whether population decline is good or bad does indeed make for interesting discussion. I think that is one argument that may never be settled. Personally, I tend to enjoy life a lot better in areas that are not overcrowded. I see very densely populated areas as being subject to the kind of total breakdown that would be very unlikely to occur in more sparsely populated areas.

They fell? That's what vodka will do for you. Let's sell them some LifeAlert bracelets. "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up."

Add in a high abortion rate, astounding STD rates, and some other factors, and you find that sterility is quite common as well.

I'm sure the Chinese and the Islamics would be quite happy to occupy all that Russian empty space. Demographics is destiny whether you like it or not.

Bear...
The Chinese are pulling a "Mexico" on the Russians. Check the daily movement of Chinese into Russia. I bet the loss of population makes no mention of the influx of Chinese.

Except that the population drop has been slowing for 2 years now. All my friends and relatives have kids, most one, some two and a few three plus. It takes time and social trends take longer to reverse then economies...but the birth rate and immigration rates are reversing. Much of the drop has been in workers leaving abroad to find jobs...now much less of a necessity. Eventually, many will come back and immigration from Ukraine will continue...who knows, with the EU's great growth rates and awesome respect for human rights, there might be a lot more Europe living in Russia soon.

This generation of Chinese has 30% more males then females...do the math, the Chinese are one generation away from population implosion and so are the Indians...that's why ultrasounds in China are illegal. Amazing how many Chinese girls accidently fall into wells.

Implosion??? From a gender imbalance???? Perhaps in some other society, not one that has been ruled by the gun for the last half century. Mexico is exporting males, eight to one over females, not because of a gender imbalance but because of over population and economic distress. The overwhelming number of Mexicans here, have no women, a very strong indication that even with women in Mexico, they are on the move.

Thanks for the narrative on Mexico...I think we were speaking of China. Now please explain why China will not have this problem? Are they going to go out and buy wives for all the lonely men?

It takes time and social trends take longer to reverse then economies...but the birth rate and immigration rates are reversing. Ten years ago I had the pleasure of spending 2 weeks in Ukraine. I discovered that I really liked the personable people in that lovely country, and I continue to wish you all well. "Shche ne vmerla, Ukrainia!"

Check my first post, I believe I said, "China is pulling a "Mexico" on Russia". Check the immigration rolls and the illegals from China if you like, it is preponderance of men. However, it is not gender based, that is not the reason they are coming here, just like the Mexicans. Once again, the gender differential in China has nothing to do with emigration.

From the economic point, that is true. But, that does not change the coming implosion in Chinese demographics. It's all about the murder/genocide of babies, primarly female ones. With only 1 child allowed in the cities, girls keep disappearing....sooner or later, you have to pay the piper.

Stavka, if Russia demographics are so great, then why is the life expectancy of men 54, while that of women is 72?
Why is the death rate 70% higher than the birth rate?
Why do at least 500,000 people emigrate from Russia each year?
Why is it every young Russian scientist I've met is trying to get British or US citizenship?
...but the birth rate and immigration rates are reversing.
It hardly matters if the birth rate is reversing when one third of 18 year old males are too unhealthy to serve in the armed forces. Also there is a serious gender imbalance problem in Russia, in favour of women. The death rate for children is much higher than in Western Europe and the USA. As for the immigration rate, well when the best qualified people have already left, then what do you expect?
...who knows, with the EU's great growth rates and awesome respect for human rights, there might be a lot more Europe living in Russia soon.
Not in a million years mate.

As usual, let me correct you. Frankly speaking...how are you a research scientist when you do so little research before making your announcements all so high handedly here? Do you think people are to stupid to look it up for themselves? I've corrected you on almost every thread, but you still don't do the research or use dated information. I hope this isn't the caliber of work of British scientists or it would easily explain why you need Russian expatriats there...who by the way, guarentee you will mostly start coming back as the economy continues to improve. Human nature.
First off, the death age of men is 58.9 vs females at 72.4. Check your statistics. Start here, it's a short study with suggestions on improvements.
By the way, a little history...always thought the English were better educated in history...hope you're being the exception...Iran's population almost doubled when the Iotola called for women to have children to make Iran powerful...consider this...population trends, in a willing and especially nationalistic population can reverse dramatically in quite a short order...which is starting in Russia....basically, Russian self confidence is on the increase. But let us continue...
A report claims that abortions in Russia still considerably outnumber births. The data, published by the pro-abortion World Health Organization, indicates that Russian women registered 1,696 abortions for every 1,000 births last year, compared with 1,971 abortions per 1,000 in 1990. The report observes that Russia and central-eastern Europe, which have about 10% of the worlds population, account for up to a third of all abortions worldwide. The only eastern European country which has reversed its Communist-era abortion rate is Poland.
International Herald Tribune, 2/16/2001; SPUC 2/19/2001
While a horrific statistic, it does show a marked decline, with the Church and conservatives leading the way. Now to just ban the damn process in the first place.

As for the EU, we'll see. Considering the EU requires very high taxes and a very low growth rate...as characterized by its scolding of Ireland last year for a 10% growth rate and low taxation...we'll see. Some how I doubt this situation will continue to long without immigration out...especially considering that EU giants like Germany routinely sport unemployment rates of almost 12% and little growth to show for it. Your Limy pride might be getting the best of you, especially since the United Kingdom could very soon become a chapter in history as Scotland and Wales seek independence.

Frankly speaking...how are you a research scientist when you do so little research before making your announcements all so high handedly here?Because I am research scientist, unfortunately, I don't have enough time to double check all my statistics from lots of different sources, just for the purpose of arguing with you.
I hope this isn't the caliber of work of British scientists or it would easily explain why you need Russian expatriats there...who by the way, guarentee you will mostly start coming back as the economy continues to improve. Human nature.
Regarding the Russians who are working here, without my help they would find life much more difficult. They are very grateful to me actually. I often spend at least an hour a day helping them out, even though its not my job. But still they are clever people. Also working abroad gives them opportunities to do research they can't do in Russia.
P.S. a 13.5 year age gap between the life expectancies of men and women still points to serious public health problems.

Eventually, many will come back I've been predicting for several years now that white Americans will be immigrating to Russia within the next 20-30 years. They won't have any choice if they want to find work or be able to be accepted in schools.
