"It's just a public relations stunt," said Sohail Mohammed, an immigration lawyer who has represented many New Jersey detainees caught in the government's post-Sept. 11 sweep.

If it was a public relations stunt they wouldn't be doing it quietly, would they idiot.

Send overstays home now.

Most of the absconders on the government's list of about 1,000 have been tracked down by specially formed "apprehension teams" that search public records to locate them, Bergeron said.

A drop in the bucket, but it does prove like the IRS Uncle Sam is efficient when he WANTS to be.

There's no reason to believe illegal immigration couldn't be stopped and those who don't belong deported. We must turn up the heat and not stop till that happens.

And after we send home the ones that have overstayed their visas, we need to examine even the valid visas very carefully, and if the visa holders meet a certain set of criteria (that is, if they fit a (gasp!!) profile), those visas should be pulled and the potential terrorists sent home, too.

These guys are being scapegoated," said Sandra Nichols, a New York immigration lawyer who represents several alien absconders being held in New Jersey jails. "They're being treated excessively harshly because it's easier to do that than to look at how our government dropped the ball before Sept. 11. These guys are not terrorists. They're all overstays."

Oh? And you know this, how? You know who the terrorists are and so know for sure that these guys aren’t them? I believe the FBI would like to have a word with you in that case. If not then you are just talking to hear your head roar.

They are illegal and should have been deported when their visa expired. I wonder if we could put a GPS system to work here. A built in chip in a visa and/or passport that could track them down. Just a thought! But at least it's a START to get them all out of here!

Very true.

They shouldn't be executed, held in solitary for months on end, or denied access to legal support.

But they should be questioned and then put on the cheapest transport available back to their native lands.

And if they come back, they can try to set swimming endurance records from just outside the territorial limits in the Atlantic.

That sounds like a good idea to me. Any visitor who doesn't like it tough. No one has a "right" to come here, yet that's how everyone around the world thinks today. Our hospitality has been abused long enough.

How about a surgically implanted chip?

Bump to that!

That would do it! If you want to enter the US (at least legally) then you'd have to have the chip implanted. We'll have to think of a way to mark the illegals. Maybe the border patrol should be given permanent red paint balls and ordered to "shoot" all illegals they come across right between the eyes. That way there would be no way for them to hide the fact that they're illegal! Would make deportation a little easier!
