US Loses To Germany 1-0, But Shows The World USA Soccer Is For Real
ESPN ^ | June 20,2002 | Self

Nothing much to add. I saw only the last fifteen minutes of the game.

Germany went ahead on a header that'd have been nearly impossible for any keeper to ward off, and the US nearly came back and tied it--it was literally a matter of inches.

At the end of the game the German keeper collapsed to the ground.

This was a case of fighting one of THE premier teams in the world to a near standstill.

We come away from this tournament with elevated stature in international soccer.

Thank you, Team USA, you did your country proud!

USA! USA! USA!

It's too bad American-style football has NO international following. It'd be great to be able to dominate a "World Cup of American Football" every four years!

I read earlier in the month that an Italian sports reporter wrote that Italy better win this World Cup because the U.S. will be the dominating factor in the years to come.

Looks like he was right.

With youngsters like Landon Donovan and DeMarcus Beasley, the future looks bright.

Now, on to the Semis!

DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES!

ONLY 65? And you actually think Barcelona will score?

And lucky for our team we are not like the 'soccer countries'. If we were, they would be punished for their loss in not so nice ways.

The Korean player who scored the "golden goal" in OT to beat Italy in the last round played his club ball in Italy.

After the game he was fired from the team!

They will get a field goal. After all, NFL kickers are foreigners.

And being that europeans will be included, they will change the rules in someway to try and supress our superiority and keep down our scoring. Plus the coaches of our professional teams have a habit of trying to not run up the score to embarrassing proportions. We only run it up to the point where you know your ass has been kicked and you better not come back.

And let us not forget the player who was KILLED for scoring in his own goal.

While Scott Norwood of the Bills and Bill Buckner of the Red Sox kept low profiles after their game loosing blunders, they were not killed by out of control fans.

If they were soccer players, they would be DEAD.

I lost all respect for the Italians after that.

They are good in the air, no question about it. Certainly no disgrace in losing to them, or losing the way they played today.

I loved how Jehremies (sp?) was rolling around on the ground like he got kicked in the groin by Reyna. Reyna didn't even touch him and it was a pure farce. I just hate when Euroweenies fake injuries.

The US pretty much dominated the game and had the best scoring chances. Germany had only 10 minutes of strong pressure on Friedel, and unfortunately they buried one of them. We tested Kahn much more than they tested Friedel. The Germans should feel lucky to come away with the win.

This World Cup reminds me of the recent NBA Finals between the Lakers and the New Jersey Nets. Newspaper and television reporters went all over northern New Jersey looking to interview Nets fans about their team's improbable run to the finals, and all they found were a bunch of disinterested people and some very interested basketball fans, most of whom were rooting for the Lakers.

I am VERY proud of our team!

I do think we got robbed of a penalty kick - that was clearly a hand ball in the box.

Ty Keough (sp?) should be deported.

Ehhh, I don't know if that's not more than just a matter of time. Mitch Williams got some pretty credible death threats after his debacle, and I think that was a major, major part of why he left baseball...

Did you happen to catch the first round Brazil game where an opposing player kicked the ball at Rivaldo? It hit him in the leg and he immediately grabbed his FACE and fell writhing to the ground!

It was so pathetic that FIFA fined him for faking. I've never heard of that before.

And soccer fans wonder why we who don't like the game call the players a bunch of panty waist drama queens.
